Car Windscreen Crack - MOT Pass / Fail ?

Hi guys,

I wonder if you might be able to help...

Was gifted my first car a year ago, with a brand new MOT on it. The windscreen has a chip and horizontal crack on the passenger side - see picture. I was told that the car had passed its MOT with this chip and crack as AutoGlass had filled it.

A year on, its time for the MOT again and I'm really not sure that it will pass. Looking at the regulations for windscreens for MOT, theres no way it could have passed in its current state. It hasn't become any worse in the year that I have had the car.

I have cover on my insurance for windscreens - with £60 excess - but I'm reluctant to claim on my first year driving, as it may affect my renewal price.

Barring any other problems with the car - is this a pass or a fail?

I think I already know the answer, just wanted to check....

If it helps its an 02 plate KA.

I think it needs to be under 40mm long.

That's how I read it. so it's a fail -- unless it is "invisibly" repaired.

Yes I thought it had to be under 40mm if it was in any area but the driver's view - in which case it must be under 10mm.

Like I said, it has been repaired, but is visible from both inside and out.

Whats the best bet then - repair the windscreen then MOT the car?
Or try it for MOT and see what happens?

This is my first time doing this - so I have no ideas!

I'm not expert on this, only going on my experience from my last car, it went through 3 MOTs with a 30mm crack in the windscreen out side the zone, every time there was an advisory saying crack in windscreen less than 40mm, so I'm assuming that 40mm is the limit.

10mm over the wheel, 40mm in any other swept area, anything goes outside the wipers. However the manual says - Repaired windscreens must be inspected to the same test criteria as unrepaired windscreens. Repairs must be judged solely on the basis of whether they interfere with vision. An ‘invisible’ or barely detectable repair, finished flush with the surrounding glass, does not count as damage even if it exceeds the limit on damage allowed in the test. If these criteria are met, the position and size of repairs is not relevant for the purposes of the test. - The crack isn't exactly invisible though. I'd ask the tester beforehand myself.

Its a fail.

I'm surprised you say the crack has not got any worse over the last 12 month ... it will do.

Also, you shouldn't be claiming on your current insurance as the damage occurred prior to you taking out that insurance.

I'd try it, you've got nothing to loose, you know that the worst case is a new screen.

Not always, see my above post, I had a 30mm crack that stayed that way for 3 MOTs, even through weather conditions from near artic to near tropical.
