What overcharge, £4.50 is reasonable, £1.80 to get to the P.O with the time it takes and preperation needed. Don't buy it if you are going to moan about the postage, oh wait you were happy with the postage, so whats the problem. Some people are never happy.

Tottaly right, for me postage includes all packing , time and cost it takes to take the item to post office and if possible fees ebay charge.

It really winds me up when people buy items for cheap then either insit it sent one way or another or moan when it sent in a cheap or re-used packing.

Postage & packing, is for errr, postage & packing.
Your costs to get to the post office should be added to the start price of an item, if you're a business seller. If a private seller, then you shouldn't really be charging people as it then becomes a service, which in reality would mean you being a business.

The cost is for postage and packing not just postage. The cost may include the sellers bus fare to the Post Office or parking charge, the cost of envelopes, sellotape etc. The p&p is stated before you bid and if you felt it was excessive you should not have bid. It is really unfair for sellers to mark them down after you agreed to the p&p costs. A lot of sellers reuse packaging not because they are being cheap but because it help everyone to recycle.

Sellers shouldn't add petrol, parking, bus fare, shoe leather, for time standing in the queue at the post office.
Post & packing is just that.
The sellers who do should expect to be marked down on their costs.
I don't mind one little bit getting recycled packaging but I wouldn't expect to pay nearly £2 for it.

    Postage and related charges

Be sure to specify P&P charges and related service charges in your listings. It's against our rules to provide unclear or misleading delivery information or to charge unreasonable fees for postage and related services.

    What you can charge
Actual postage cost: This is the final P&P charged. Consider what others in the market charge for delivery of the item being sold to ensure you remain competitive. Also be consistent with eBay policies for the P&P charges for the category you are listing in.
Packaging cost: This can include the cost of packaging materials.
Delivery confirmation and extra services: If these options are offered to the buyer, you can only charge what they actually cost. Examples of services including:
    Proof of postage
    Recorded delivery
    Proof of delivery
    Signed for proof of delivery
    Special dispatch fees
Tax and government imposed fees: Only applicable duties, VAT or equivalent taxes may be charged.

I wish there were stars for packing - I once rec'd a parcel wrapped in damp wallpaper, it was just not fit for purpose! That was in the pre-stars days.

Well according to this ebay page:

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/listing-surcharges.html
Postage and packing - Sellers may add a reasonable postage and packing fee to the final price of their item. A postage and packing fee can cover the seller's reasonable costs for mailing, packaging and handling the item. Postage and packing fees cannot be listed as a percentage of the final sale price.
  • After trying to write a post last night from my mobile and losing it i gave in :-)

I was initialy happy when i thought the postage was correct due to what i expected the package to weigh. Had the seller stated the weight in the listing i could/would have checked it and NOT bidded on them (I usually bulk sell baby clothes LO has grown out of - I always put the weight of the parcel and the carrier so people can check the postage is correct - usually i will round it up; for example, postage £14.75, I'll round to up £15 - I always put the clothes in a box, use parcel wrap and tape) The shoes i got was in just a bag, nothing else. As i said, had i of known the shoes would arrive as they did and the margin, i wouldnt have bidded.

I dont charge people for my time in going to the post office - i wanted rid of something so old it, i'm glad to get rid things to free up space in LO's wardrobe tbh! :)

Do people who do car boots add on an extra few quid per item for the time it takes to load the car in the morning etc?

I wouldn't dream of charging for time, but if to send the item, I was required to make a special trip to the Post office and this involved a car parking charge, I would include this in the postage packing and handling fee.
Your costs to get to the post office should be added to the start price of an item
    Why?
If this is done, the buyer still ends up paying it and if calculated correctly by the seller, the buyer would pay more this way as the seller would also be charged final value fees of the portion of the selling price that was for the parking costs.

By adding parking fees onto the start price, the buyer might pay more, the seller should get the same money as if it was added onto the P&P costs, and the only winner is ebay as they get a slightly higher fee.

You will get mixed responses on here.

If you feel it is unreasonable, then you can mark them down on their P&P stars.
