Perhaps the OP doesn't want a BMW for whatever reason?

The Merc does seem to have a slightly better image. Mind, it seems Audi is the one to go for if you really want the badge!

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

BMW's have difficulties in joining main carriageways. Good reason to avoid them!!

we have got an a5 sportback diesel, we used to do a long weekly commute and it was superb on economy and its not bad for comfort. we only use it locally now and its a right pain in the b*tt, the turning circle is poor, the corners are fairly low so easy to catch down the lanes. but it looks really good. drivers choice would be a bmw without question, but sadly the comfort is not good with the runflats, MB only had one temporarily and it was nice but too expensive and the manual was really difficult with their silly parking brake. Honda very good, had a civic and other than fuel, servicing and tyres nil costs.

    I definitely don`t want a BMW.

Interesting about the manual/auto thing with the Mercedes- thanks for that i will bear it in mind.

I`m pushing towards the Mercedes but i love the look of the A5! Really torn between both

What an eclectic short list of cars. Have you any experience of owning/driving any of them? Other than all looking broadly the same in profile, in the distance, with one eye shut it really is a bit of a lucky dip.
The A5 is the only vaguely up to date car, the Merc. stood still a long time ago, the Accord (terrible in snow and ice, it sweats if you even show it a christmas card) really does belong to the pipe and slippers brigade, prepared to still believe in the once genuine unburstability, no longer deserved, reputation of their cars.
I'd agree, get a nicely specced 5 Series, it'll trounch all of the above.

I'm guessing you haven't actually driven any of them recently.

The C-class isn't a comparison to a 5 series. Different car sizes altogether.

The A5 is a different body on an A4.

Mind you Merc is RWD and will have trouble in snow :)

My ancient E class slides around like a good 'un, but I've been reliably informed that if I fit a set of winter tyres I'll be good to go.

I was choosing between a Mercedes and a Honda Accord earlier this year and they both seem reliable and both have their afficianados. I really think you need to drive them both OP.

Another vote for Merc autobox here. The manuals are only sought after in the 190e Cosworth.

Have you driving a current C-Class? I've driven more dynamic trifles.

Currently got a Honda Accord 10+ years plus. Love it, very reliable but selling to family member. This car purchase will probably be the last car i buy so i thought i`d splash out a bit hence considering the Mercedes/Audi.

Test drove the C220- really like it, smooth and great acceleration
