Both old A & L and Santander accounts in the same online banking.

If you're telling me that you have that then I'm going to get on to Santander and I'm not going to be happy:

Yep! I still have an A&L card for my current account, I also have 2 Santander savings accounts and all three show up on the same screen when I log into the Santander website.

I still had my A & L card when I tried opening the savings account. I'm not going to get any joy out of Santander and I'm not going to change anything until the new tax year so it'll happen next year. But I'll call into phone banking but I suspect that they will say the same. Maybe my debit card number is defective lol

It did seem strange to me at the time that I have to link the savings account to my debit card to get it in online banking. But Santander phone banking confirmed it.

Come back A & L all is forgiven!

Ok I've found the problem and verified it. Everyone is going to think this is incredible:

When you apply for a savings account while logged into online banking, you are in fact applying for it to be linked to a debit card so the savings account can be accessed through an ATM. It cannot be linked through that screen to online banking. I don't have the required first 6 digits on my debit card to do that.

Opening a savings account and getting online banking has to be done via santander.co.uk while not logged in. Then when the savings account is created it should be in online banking automatically or if not can be added through add account.

Try it: While logged in click on Savings in the right hand panel, choose the esaver and take a look at the first screen after agreeing to the T & C.

Come back A & L all is forgiven

RBS are having to sell their branches in England and Nat West to sell their Scottish branches. Santander have bought them. (Something to do with the "bail-out I think).

Personally I would transfer my RBS acc to Nat West or vice versa rather than let it go to Santander.

Problem is for us we already have a current account with NW which Oh uses for his sole trader work. Once his business starts making a bit of money we hope to go to a limited company and open a business account, but at the moment with not a great credit rating it a bit of a struggle.

PLus our account with RBS is "full" current account if you see what I mean and if we open an account elsewhere we will have to go for a basic one-not sure how many current account you can have anyway?

You can have as many current accounts as there are banks, and in many cases more. I used to have three accounts with Cater and Allen.
