No it's a fact, not your sweeping generalisations but an actual real fact.

Unlike your 'facts' that no-one in Greece pays tax.

I have never said no-one in Greece pays tax.

What I believe to be true is that they collect nothing like the amount of tax that is owed and evasion is rife.

I am sure that it is true about the Olympic rules though. I just have trouble understanding why any country wants it so much, that they are prepared to take such humiliating rules and regulations and still have to pay.

Not sure if it's Olympic sports, I know that most football clubs aren't happy because they can't play any of their pre-season friendlies until the 26th of July I believe even though the Olympic football doesn't end to the 11th August. Specific dispensation has to be requested as I understand it and matches have to be played in specific stadiums - it could have something to do with distance from the event.

It really is interesting. I would have thought there was an antitrust/ competition issue here, especially for professional sports, again, an area i had not realised could be negatively impacted upon. One assumes all sport will in some way gain from olympics.

When you take into account festivals Summer events generate billions of pounds.

Hire fee for a top spec temporary structure at Ascot is £50,000 a day.

Chester May racing festival is hanging in there through the rain, I will be there later, any tips :) and I don't mean 'keep your money in your pocket'

  • The last 5 years festivals have proper grew, but that's mainly due to us being in recession. Does this mean when (if ever) we come out of recession the festival market will decline ???

Many big festis have cancelled - partly because everyone in the industry is working on the Olympics, partly because resources are focussed on the flagship event with biggest international impact.

What's it worth to the economy? How do you measure that? Ticket sales? By the same measure, that's how much money is removed from being spent on other sectors of the economy, so tough to measure.

Some events will carry insurance, but insurance is expensive, and some less experienced promoters/cheaper festivals will not be able to afford it.

I wonder how much this is worth. Already the summer things cancelled to not compete with the olympics so many of the spring ones closed by weather. badminton was cancelled, always a shame, but particularly in an olympics year ina sprot we have a fair chance of, and now chatsworth horse trials too, not to mention the number of smaller things rained off.

Is there indication of how much these out door things are worth to the economy?

Well I'm probably going to sound out of step again but don't let that stop me.

When I heard that we had won the Olympics, I was not impressed. Just another competition between pharmaceutical companies to see who can produce the most effective performance enhancing chemicals without being detected.

Then I heard that London would be filled with cops carrying guns and the roads closed off to the proletariat. My interest perked up. Then I discovered that missiles were going to be stationed on flats followed by news that sonic cannons were going to be used and Typhoon jets would be swooping around London.

Surreal it may be but it is certainly more interesting than synchronised swimming. And you have to pity the first streaker who drops his/her nickers for a moment on the news (or anyone within 2 miles of them).

I've heard the knicker droppers have already moved into the area... crowds of furren knicker droppers.

Local knocking shops have been shut down, while opportunistic knicker droppers are setting up.

Hi all, I hadn't realised lots of events had been cancelled due to the rain or Olympics.
In direct answer to LIR's post it must affect loads of small biz who provide services etc to the events and I doubt the smaller ones will have insurance in place. So, for them a direct loss in pocket.

I only know know about my sector and the rain (it seemed to go on for weeks and weeks) has affected sales volumes on the H st there will be some stock dumping going on at some point, if not already....which is all good for MSE'ers. A pair of discounted sandals isn't too shabby when the sun finally arrives.:) Bad news for some suppliers though as the big guys wriggle out of forward orders due to overstock. Direct loss in their pockets too.

Fortunately, the rain hasn't had too much impact on us we sell mainly to places where the sun always shines and the best customers seem to be in bankrupt or nearly bankrupt countries for some reason.

The only snag I have with the Olympics is that I am about to live next to a load of missiles for a few weeks. Naughty MoD popped a very sensible leaflet with a tasteful photo of said missiles through our door.......2 days after the meeting was held. I think it will boost sales in the cafe there as people come up to take a look so one winner.
