I wonder how much this is worth. Already the summer things cancelled to not compete with the olympics so many of the spring ones closed by weather. badminton was cancelled, always a shame, but particularly in an olympics year ina sprot we have a fair chance of, and now chatsworth horse trials too, not to mention the number of smaller things rained off.
Is there indication of how much these out door things are worth to the economy?

I get the impression that absolutely nothing matters as long as the Olympics go OK and a few of our great and good don't end up looking a bit silly to their international mates.
Most normal people would have been happy with an opening ceremony that "only" cost 40 million, but some bod decided it needed twice that so out with the chequebook.
I don't get it.0 -
Can you give examples of what's been cancelled so as not to clash with the Olympics? I don't know of anything. Unless you were planning on having a Bring & Buy sale in Greenwich Park in the first week of August I see no solid reason to cancel anything.
Shame about Chatsworth and all the waterlogged racing recently, but that's an occupational hazard when living in Britain. Ice cream vans were making an unexpected killing in March, a time they'd usually be standing idle.
As for the Opening Ceremony, I think the idea is to convince everyone Britain is Open For Business; creative, thriving and definitely not a country of snivelling incompetent whingers. If I'd been in charge I'd have done a display of morris dancing followed by a burning of a wicker man, with everyone served tea and biscuits. They are an EYESORES!!!!0 -

A well known example of not running this year might be Glastonbury. (i believe the headline was lack of loos and police due to olympics rather than the date itself)
Tbh, i think the things being lost know due to weather now are interesting, because losses made from them this year might well be rare occasions, and if we know how much they are worth then we can say 'at least they might not be rained off next year', i was not meaning to confuse weather tpwith the olympics, merely thinking they were both impacting on the same sort of event. It is a huge shame about the horse trials this spring in relation to the olympics....the buildup this year would have been tremendous.
I am also interested if the non equestrian sports are impacted in this way? I.e. are track events ipmpacted? I have no idea!
I think the morris dancers and cream tea idea that i think you posted some time ago was also pretty good tbh.
Edit: here is a thing on glastonbury http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/glastonbury/8069257/Glastonbury-2012-cancelled-due-to-lack-of-portaloos-and-police.html
The good news for thingslike loos and stuff is there operators are still profiting i guess.0 -
Do these events carry Cancellation Insurance at least to cover set up costs if not lost revenue?
If so I wonder what sort of cancellation criteria there are.
Badminton said it was the logistics of the operation as much as safety.
Remember Silverstone, 10 years or so ago when the Car Parks (fields) became quagmires?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
"big business is parasitic, like a mosquito, whereas I prefer the lighter touch, like that of a butterfly. "A butterfly can suck honey from the flower without damaging it," "Arunachalam Muruganantham0 -

There simply must be insurance, surely. Tbh, i had not thought it through that far to impact beyond the immeadiate industry. But for all the years' premiums paid when nothing goes wrong it is hopefully an easily stomached loss.
I am afraid i do not remember silverstone ten years ago. Or any other year!0 -

Errr no, Olympic rules mean that no events can take place during the Olympic events. It's not a rule that the people in the government or previous government want so that the Olympics go well and nothing matters but because those are the rules. It happens in every country that has held the Olympics.
Explains a lot really.
Thats interesting, i did not know that. Is this just events in olympic sports?0 -

.
Would that be the "Ben Dover" Clause?
Or just one of them.0 -
