I think it's perfectly OK to explain to your girlfriend that money is extremely tight with you right now, and you're going to have more long romantic walks and nights in with homemade casseroles, and fewer nights out. If that's unbearable to her, she can pay for more activities, and if she's not willing to do that she's not worth planning your future around.

Good luck. I'm a cyclist myself (through choice) and it's really not been the weather for it recently, has it!

    Definitely hasn't.

Nothing could highlight my foolishness more than when forced to cycle 12 miles in the pouring rain at stupid o'clock at night.

Is your car being used by anyone? If not I would consider selling it now, its just sitting lossing money at the moment. You cycle a fair bit it seems so that will keep you fit and healthly so do look on the positives. Sounds like a 2nd job is the way to go, you should really consider saving prior to moving out, by that I mean save what your outgoings would be in a flat for you and your g/f. Live off what you have left.

If you can handle that and your g/f isn't demanding trips to the cinema you will have a better idea if you can cope finincially. It is a big step, setting up home with someone else, so good luck with that.

I'm sorry but if your girlfriend is working full time and you aren't and you were to move in together, then you can't be expected to split rent and bills down the middle. Equally, she should know that if she wants to go out and you say you can't really afford to then she should pay.

Forget being emasculated by not being 'the provider', you don't need to be. Women are equal now and so shouldn't expect you to provide for them.

Sounds like she needs a good talking to.

Would you like to to explain this to my dear OH?

I do agree, but I can just imagine the "discussion" if I said this to my better half.:rotfl:

I may well look at selling my car then - you're right, it's silly to leave it there losing money.

Hopefully by the end of this month I'll have stashed a few hundred quid away as it is so that can go towards the credit card.

Funnily enough the first bill just dropped through the door. Very glad I got 0% as minimum payment is £5.00.

I will no doubt clear what's on it this month though (£160 for cost of DD awareness course).

Without sounding like a complete sap by the way, it's really helped me organise my mind by getting the advice of you all.

    Many thanks!

So samsam89 let's assume insurance is £1100 approx. How are you going to manage to save that in the next 6 months, with your fine to pay and all the expense of moving in somewhere with your extravagent g/f?

I'm not having a go here, please don't think that, I'm just trying to get you to look realistically at your current situation. And using your credit card to alleviate your short term financial problems will only lead to long term headaches (been there got the t shirt).

Just a thought as you work for JLP, and are used to dealing with customers would you not be ideal for say a, Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda.... Even a Shell or BP petrol station. With these places being open 24/7, it might be easier to get additional hours / or a 2nd job with them, if you have one within cycling distance.

Well I guess I won't be able to move out until I have raised my income to full time.

I am going to have to sell my car and significantly downsize

I disagree about the credit card though - I had no option but to do it that way because the court ordered me to pay on or before the end of June. I'm not using it for anything else other than the costs imposed by the court.

I haven't ever paid off car insurance as one lump sum - I have always paid monthly.

That is what they want you to pay, so you do not pay it off within the 0% period. So please pay the balance, (or at least pay the balance into a savings account so you can pay it at the end of the interest free period). That is how they make money. Whilst I use a credit card, I do pay the balance in full each month.

I have been scouring the job sites but have yet to find anything available at all thus far.

I live in a small pocket of Norfolk so when jobs like that come about - they generally attract a lot of applicants.

I'm not being dismissive and lazy because I am truthfully looking but the job market is rather baron at present.
