Could I have you ideas on school trips for Primary school children? At My children's school Year 1 & Year 2 go on the same trip so now my D.S is in year 2 he is going to same place he went last year and to compound matters my D.D is going to the same place she went to 2 years ago.Surely there are a wealth of alternative places to take school children,F.Y.I we are in Manchester.

what about a farm trip? safari park? beach?
I suppose school trips are governed by travel time etc so that the children are back by 3.30.
Where do they normally go?The best thing you can spend on a child, is time.0 -
Museum of Science and Industry
The Lowry
Bolton Steam Museum
Chester Zoo
Lightwater Valley
IronbridgeIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
Not sure if you mean day trips or residential stays.
We're in Cheshire but my kids did several day trips in and around Manchester. They did MOSI, the Manchester museum, Imperial War Museum, the velodrome. They also did Styal Quarry Bank Mill (very popular with primary schools), Jodrell Bank, Northwich Salt Museum, Chester Roman city, Castelon (Derbyshire) and Buxton for the caves. There's a bird sanctuary place near Knutsford my friends kids have been to with their school (they're near Altrincham). For day trips if you're towards the south side Cheshire has loads. I'm not so familiar with the other side but if you're North Manchester then there must be places heading in towards Lancashire. Or in another direction there's all the Peak District. Tons of choice!
For residential they did Foxhowl in Delamere Forest (that was always the first trip for the Yr1 kids). They also did Anglesey and Conway - depending which side of Manchester you're on that might be quite achievable. And there was somewhere in the Peak Distric but I forget where!0 -
Jodrell Bank was always popular when I was at primary school.
There are literally hundreds of places within travelling distance of Manchester, where are they taking them?
I don't think they'll change the trip based on your suggestions though, I'm afraid!0 -
Mine always did school trips based on whatever topic they were learning at that time. We are in Yorkshire, so
topic about:
Transport- National railway Museum
Sealife - The Deep
Victorians - Cannon Hall
Vikings - Jorvick Centre
Intermingled at KS2 level (Juniors yr 3-6) were small very local trips within the town such as town museum, local supermarket, nearest church etc.
If they are doing exactly the same trip 2 years running (rather than the same place but looking at different things) it is something you'd possibly have to raise via your PTA or whatever communication you have via your school for suggestions.0 -
Ordsall Hall might be worth a trip - it was shut for a couple of years for restoration but apparently they've even landscaped the grounds, could only be a good thing it did look a tad bizarre sat in the middle of a field in the middle of a housing estate. It's close to the city centre and, IIRC, reasonably near a tram stop.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

The school curriculum should govern the type of educational visit undertaken. All manner of things have to be considered including suitability, accessibility, risk assessment, distance, facilities for toilets, lunch and wet days. This all has to be done at a cost acceptable to the parents.
Some venues do offer alternative learning experiences.
Ask the school the purpose of the visit before raising your concerns.0 -
Wigan Pier?
Speke Hall or other National Trust places
Liverpool Museum / Albert Dock

School trips are crap now. When I was at primary school, we went to
Cutty Sark and HMS Belfast.
Science museum
Natural History museum
Toy museum......(brilliant!)
London Zoo......(in the 1976 heatwave, had a coach full of kids fainting in the heat!)
Went to a ballet.....(which we all got detention for afterwards, for laughing at the male dancers. That was at my secondary school though)
Ice-skating at Streatham ice rink
Hampton Court Palace.
My son's trips consisted of......
The Nelson Mandela exhibition during Black History Month (for 7 year olds!)
The Turner exhibition at the Tate gallery (I went to that one, gotta love dragging a class full of extremely bored 8 year olds around an art gallery)
The local woods to search for dinosaur teeth. (They all enjoyed that one but it's a 5 minute walk away from the school !!!!!!!)
Whatever happened to the cool trips? And they never get a coach now, they all get on the bus for free. No more eating your packed lunch at 9.10am whilst making rude signs to other motorists out of the back window."I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -
Thanks for all the input D.D is going to Eureka and D.S is going to Blackpool Zoo they are never curriculum based just where gets suggested by the teachers.Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.0
