Working Hours

Oh for goodness sake.
Firstly, what does your contract of employment say?
I know from an office based environment, it isn't stated but its normally assumed that you should be ready to start your working day at the start time. That means you are sat at your desk ready to work. If this means getting in 15 minutes early to make yourself a brew, turn your PC on and 'settle in', then so be it. I know for a fact, people who get in at 8:59 and make a brew and settle in for 9:15 is frowned upon. Although its normally give and take dependant on the company you work for and the staff sizes.
Secondly, your in a position where you have job. Yes, you work 10 hours more each 4 weeks than your paid for. BUT your also paid for 140 hours, which many aren't. If it's that much of a pain in the backside, look for something that fits your 'needs'.
I'm going to assume you work in retail. I personally would assume you would be expected to open the door and greet customers at opening time. So that would in turn, mean you being there a bit early and preparing yourself and 'helping out'. I believe little companies grow better with employee's who dedicate themselves to the company in some ways. You know, if my boss NEEDS me to stay 20 minutes over, I'd do it. I'd hold on to that for a while, and when you need a doctors appointment or need to leave earlier, mention the extra hours you do unpaid if they are being sh!tty.
As others mentioned, if it all adds up to a minimum wage hourly rate, you really haven't got much of a leg to stand on. I thinks it a 'like it or lump it' sorta thing.
I assume all the other employees AND your manager arrive when you do? If you ain't getting paid for it, they proberly aren't either. Want to know how your manager got to be a manager? By not being a whining sod and getting on with it!0
