How long to accrue holidays?

    All the places I've worked you start accruing holiday from the day you start, and you can take it any time but if you take more holiday than you have accrued when you leave, you have to pay back what you owe. Never heard of your companies policies.
    yes thats why some say you cant take any for the first 3 mths in case in week 3 you took a 2 week holiday and got paid but never came back - you wouldn't be entitled to it so they then have no way of getting it back from you

    What? No, you are entitled to 28 days each year so what you are saying surely is not right?

    They can not give you ZERO holidays for a years work!

    No you get the holidays, as I say holidays are set, the place closes, I'm off, I just won't get any pay until I am there 12 months.

    You are entitled to PAID HOLIDAY!!!


    The basics of holiday rights

    There is a minimum right to paid holiday, but your employer may offer more than this. The main things you should know about holiday rights are that:
    • you are entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks paid annual leave - 28 days for someone working five days a week (capped at a statutory maximum of 28 days for all working patterns)
    • part-time workers are entitled to the same level of holiday pro rata (so 5.6 times your usual working week, eg 22.4 days for someone working four days a week)
    • you start building up holiday as soon as you start work

    you started in may so by july when you have your shutdown you are entitled to be paid at least the amount you have accrued, (about 4 days pay) although most employers will pay the full 2 weeks and claw it back throughout the rest of the year.

    Are you sure you won't be paid for the two weeks, because you'll still have holiday to take if you aren't, and employers tend to prefer people to take close downs. Have you actually asked the employer, or are you just making assumptions?

    The employer is not allowed to hold back holiday pay for an entire year. They can make you accrue it so that you don't take too much or they can tell you "our holiday year runs from X to Z, because you joined in Y you only get B number of days until the end of Z.

    They can obviously have set holidays but need to pay you by either what you have accrued or out of your holiday pay.

    FYI - most places that have set shutdowns take it out of the holiday entitlement to start with on a full year - e.g 28 days, less 5 for shutdown, less 8 for bank holidays, leaves 15 floating.

    EDIT: What exactly does your company handbook or contract say?

    Sounds to me as though you have either been very unfortunate in your choice of employer or you have not understood.

    I've been paid for holidays in every job I've had for the last fifty years whether or not I'd worked for them for six months at the time of the holiday.
