Backing out of accepted job offer?
Comments

Hi guys
I'm now a bag of nerves, having read the direct.gov website:
Changing your mind once you have accepted an offer
If you have second thoughts about a job you have just accepted, ask the employer to agree to let you go. Give notice as soon as you can - preferably before you start.
Your new employer won't be happy if this happens, and there's a possibility they may try to sue you for breach of contract if you don't give at least the amount of notice on your contract or offer letter.
I told the other company I'd be staying where I am. I haven't slept thinking about this and it's keeping me & my husband awake at night worrying am I going to get sued?
I have never received a contract from them, however the above says I'd be in breach of contract as I've accepted an offer from them?
Any ideas or advice please?
Sally

Hi Sally,
You should contact the company (the one you don't want to start working for) and tell them your position, that your existing employer offered you somthing you would prefer, and that you are really sorry.
They won't sue you because it will be costly to them.
And if you tell them some hoo haa like you will reluctnatly take the position if they do not give you permission to break out of the 'agreement', the chances are, they won't even want you. After all, if you take a role you don't want, you won't be as effective a worker as you could be.
Just be open and honest with them. If they are nasty and mean about it, you woud'nt want to work for them any way right? If they are understanding and nice, send them a gift basket :-).0 -
I cant see anything happening with reagrds the other employer, just apologise and leave it at that. They will have had other applicants to offer the job too.0

Hi Randvegeta
I contacted them and said I was politely declining their offer despite signing the offer letter. I offered to resign from the business, and the owner has replied via email to say she's disappointed, and that she would seek advice on on the resignation letter.
I have apologised profusely, but know they were advertising for more than one role, and the vacany is still live on the jobsites as of yesterday.
Its a small family run firm so not sure they'd want to go down the legal route, but how much could I be liable for?0 -
I don't think they'll do anything. I've known people not turn up for (accepted) jobs, and at my last place a chap went to his car to fetch something on his first morning and never came back!0

Nothing - because as I mentioned earlier - you are giving them a month's notice. You seriously aren't sleeping because of this? Really? If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
it's keeping me & my husband awake at night
Think of something to distract you both
Notice given, thats the end of it.0 -
As others have said. You have given a months notice before start date so that is the matter closed. Chill and get on with your existing job

Hi everyone
Sorry to bring up an old thread - having major regrets about not taking the other job. Since staying with my current job, they've backed out of the payrise and keep putting barriers in the way/reasons not to.
I've been offered another job elsewhere on the same money - do I take it and just get out now after being messed around? I'm really stuck in 2 minds what to do as I know if I put my notice in again they'll try and talk me out of it and promise me the world again.
The new job is with someone I've worked with before who I know I can trust; just unsure about going still - any advice please?0 -
Definitely go! I wouldn't want to work for a company that lies to me and messes me around like that!Student loan - paid off in March 2014 :j Mortgage taken out in November 2013, £172,400 to go0
