Can I take my number to Tesco payg Lite?

I've had contract mobiles since 1994 but my usage is low and I reckon I've wasted thousands by now. I've sent my 30 days notice letter to Three (tried to do it by phone but just got endless pressure sales from Mumbai and I finally rang off).
I think Tesco payg Lite seems the best option. As far as I understand, I get a SIM from a branch of Tesco for nothing, pay for a top-up code number, then I put the SIM in an old handset, then pay 8p/min. (Never done this before.)
I don't much care about keeping my number, but could I do it if I wanted to?
Thanks for any replies!

You can port your number to any network. Just get a PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) from '3' and give it to the new network. When the number is ported your contract with '3' gets terminated, but you still have to pay for the 30 days notice period (if you are outside of the minimum term of your contract).
However, I am not sure that you can get Tesco Lite:
http://mobilenetworkcomparison.co.uk/reviews/tesco/Unfortunately, Tesco are trying to phase this out and you can’t order SIMs for the Lite tariff anymore. They might even tell you it’s no longer available.
There are many other cheap PAYG options available: http://mobilenetworkcomparison.co.uk/compare/ ,
but I wouldn't exclude short-term sim-only contracts like, say, £8 Talkmobile.0 -
Yes you can port your number over.
I use the service currently and have never had any problems with it.
They still offer free sim,s https://www.tescomobile-freesim.co.uk/lite-sim/ online so i assume its still available to new customers. If you get a sim instore it will be on there other tariff and your have to phone them and change it over.Normally they charge 99p instore for sim.
Failing that there is always http://www.talkmobile.co.uk/pay_as_you_go_essential.html which piggy backs on Vodafone.0
