A pet is not some kind of inanimate object that you can just throw away when you feel like it, you can't just kill an animal just because you are in debt. Worst case scenario you should take it to a no kill shelter.

It's best to ignore self important people like her, they are embarrassing and should be avoided at all costs. She will have a misserable life and sadly with that attitude so will her poor child!

Thing is if you have both children and pets and there genuinely isn't enough to feed both if someone loses their job or gets too ill to work it gets more complicated YOU might be fine eating plain pasta but Social Services get a bit upset if that's all you feed your kids !!!

If you become too ill to work or are out of wok, government pick up a lot of the pieces. Yes, I agree children should come before pets, and as someone who works within the Childcare sector I can confidently say many families whose children end up in care come from families where there seemed to of been many pets.

Taking on a pet is a responsibility you should plan for for the next however many years they are expected to survive, along with the dreaded illnesses.

If you get rid of pet insurance to put £15 more a month into food or other bills, you are your own worst enemy as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't have children I couldn't feed and care for without the governments help, so why would I have a pet that I couldn't afford in the first place? Yes, debt is a hard thing. I'm currently in a DRO myself, but there is NO excuse for taking on a pet and not facing the responsibility you have brought on yourself.

IF I was in a position where I was at a stage where I was possibly neglecting an animal due to not being able to feed their provide vet care they needed, I would source a suitable new owner. Although I ca safely say, as I have prepared for the worst case scenarios, I know I would never be in such a situation.

I'm by no means 'rich', but I knew what I was taking on for what could be the next 10 - 15 years.

Animals have to fit in with your lifestyle and affordability, so surely when choosing an animal you assess your situation in advance?

There is plenty of cash coming from government AND PDSA type charity's AND debt advice and help that there is never an excuse to neglect an animal other than that you have not considered the actually role of being a pet owner.

Hopefully her horrible attitude at work will go against her, you can't have been the only one who noticed and it will reflect really badly on the company if she's like that with customers. I'm sure shouting out her offensive opinions in a training session isn't showing the skills they wanted her to learn! What some people don't understand is that pets are living things and part of the family, not disposable possessions!

Oh dear, she'd hate us, we are in debt and have a Labrador and baby on the way! (both working full time just FYI).
Having the dog means we'd rather spend our spare time taking her walking, rather than being tempted to go to the cinema or eat out as we feel too guilty to leave her! So I think we're better off with her than without! :)

    Thanks for your opinions guys.

I have pets myself and was shocked at this comment. Its not the sort of thing you should shout out.. it lacks taste to be honest. Everyone else in the room was shocked at well, even someone who has an elderly dog.

Ironically, this person is in debt to her eyeballs herself, paying her estranged husband's unsecured debt while he lives in their mortgaged house. By the way, the husband is not the father of the child. She frequently dumps her child on her mother or whomever is having a sleepover while she runs around town with a NEW fancy man.

So her points of view on pets should be the least of her worries.

She probably thrives on upsetting people like you.

Ignore her. That'll upset her more than any anger or your distress, as she's just an older version of the toddler who shouts 'willies and bums!' in the middle of the supermarket.

aww take away my bit of fun:p

  • Funny that, CAB gave me the same answer, get rid of your pets. I have 3 cats and 3 dogs. Due to losing my birth mum just over 3 years ago, my adopted Mum/Aunt 2.5 yrs ago and my dad recently i have faced one knock back after another and ended up in debt.
I have a male friend who has been staying with me, due to being slightly unstable, (slight understatement!) The council consider me as co-habitating, so I don't qualify for any housing help.
I called CAB and was told throw my friend out and get rid of the animals, even though I explained that the only reason I am still here is due to the fact that my pets need me.
I have sold all my jewellery, games, consoles and pleasurable things to keep the roof over my head and food to feed my babies.
I may not have insurance or much coming in but my babies do not and never have gone without. I have had to make arrangements with vets to pay weekly due to no RSPCA or PDSA locally.
My babies choose to be with me, the cats all come home and the dogs are with me wherever I am in the house. The give me their love because they know that I love them
So to those who say plan for the future, how do you plan for the death of your parents and how it affects you? It was a bolt from the blue and no amount of forward planning could have predicted how it affected me.
