You can smell if it's gone rancid - that's the point to chuck it out. Glad your cakes turned out well!
Animal fat always freezes well so you can freeze the butter or the cakes if you need to preserve either."Does it spark joy?" - Marie Kondo

Mmm cakes...
Pleased you didn't waste the butter and enjoyed the cakes!
There was a time when no foods came with dates printed on them. For centuries we've used common sense and survived! Look, sniff and if it seems ok, taste, then trust your senses. Generally I'd only be super-cautious with shellfish.0 -
yep I too would use it I don't ever look at BBD or use by I use my common sense and nose and I'm still here after cooking for well over 50 years

Just a little note on freezing butter.
I usually use Lurpak spreadable and it's OK to freeze the ordinary Lurpak and the "lighter" version.
However, if you try to freeze Lurpak "lightest" the moisture will separate out.0 -
Hi there,
I bought some sausages today for a bbq at my allotment that ended up being cancelled. The sausages have sat at my allotment in a cool bag (no ice pack) for about 6.5 hours (from 3pm until 9.30pm). They spent 30 minutes in a hot car - after that I took them out the car and left them in the shade.
Are they still OK to eat? They are in the fridge now but I daren't eat them till I know they will be alright.
