On Monday I made a soup from homemade chicken stok. I added some lentils and potato to the stock.
Unfortunately, I realised today it has been left covered on teh hob since Monday.
It has a white scum on top but my homemade soup often does (fat, other stuff, dunno).
    Would you:

    a) Just eat it

    b) Skim off the scum and eat it

    c) Skim off the scum, heat it up and check it by smell/taste before deciding

    d) Just bin it

I'm most tempted by c) but I was sick this morning randomly, and am doing a fast today as part of the 5:2 diet so I'm wary of upsetting my tummy as it is currently empty!

I also don't want to throw it away as it is tasty and low-calorie.

Left out since Monday, white scum on top  (are you sure the 'scum' isn't mould starting to grow).

I would throw away and next time remember to refrigerate or freeze.

It probably is, but IME white mould isn;t dangerous and is easily removed. (Yeah, I'm sometimes a bit skanky :o )

I usually have a cast-iron stomach and can eat anything, I am a regular cutter-off of mould.

    No chicken in it ????
    Eat it !!

Well, it was made from boiling the chicken carcass, but there isn;t any meat in it. It is a meat-based stock though.

  • I have no advice to give re soup but wondered, I made jacket potatoes last night and left one in the oven, had to dash out to work so it has sat in the oven over night.

Would that be alright to eat? (reheat in mircowave)

    xx

I'll eat ANYTHING, but i think 3 days out of the fridge is not a good idea.

I'd not bat an eyelid at eating those.

However, I'd not be eating 3-4 day old room temperature soup with or without scum:eek:

if the scum is foamy/frothy/bubbly it is not good to eat.. I think this is the first time I have said maybe not to this question.

Potatoes ferment and cause the foamyness so no.

I would err on the side of caution and bin it. Chicken can be a source of salmonella. The bacteria if present in small amounts is easily killed by cooking at high temperature, however keeping it at room temperature can allow the bacteria to reproduce and get to toxic levels.
This is why for safety cooked food should be cooled quickly and then kept in the fridge.
  • I would bin it. If it has been out that long it isn't worh the risk especially if you have already been sick today.

Meh, I frequently leave out soups/stews on the hob with all sorts of things in them, make them on the Monday and eat all week till the Friday - they're always fine! Just skim the white scum off, heat it up and nom nom.

P.S It completely freaks my boyfriend out and he won't eat it after Wednesday. 8-)

The scum isn;t foamy but I've not heated the soup since monday so I've decided to err on the side of caution and bin it. It's not like it cost much to make, and I can use the veg stock I've made to make more soup.

Probably will have another chicken at the weekend anyway so can make more chicken stock and soup next week.

    Thanks everyone!
