in Water bills
I have a water meter and its costing me about £150 a month. Its a let property with five tennants.
I want the meter removed and have asked united utilities, but they are refusing to remove it.
Is there anything i can do to get it removed?

Why is it costing you anything ? Their water bill so their responsibilityThere is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

How come they are using so much water? £150 a month is 5x what we pay for a family of 4.
Can you not get them paying the bill so they might be more careful?Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Once a meter is installed, it's there forever, you can only revert to RV billing in the first 12 months. Next time the STA comes to an end, redraft it so that water is not included in the rent-it's unusual for it to be so if metered.
Or is this property an HMO?No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Why on earth would United Utilities remove the meter???
Were you expecting them to say 'yeah, no problem mate, waste as much water as you like...'
If your tenants are using that much water, it is only RIGHT that you are on a meter.
Next time the tenancy agreement is renewed, take water out of the inclusive rent.

As a landlord why did you agree to pay the water bill in the first place?
If one of the tenants has a grudge against you, and knows that you are picking up the metered water bill, then what is to stop him leaving a tap running 24 hours a day?0 -

I have a similar problem with my local Morrison's. They have meters fitted to all their petrol pumps, which I think is most unfair !
I have asked them to remove these meters but they also have refused - should I write to my MP about this rip-off ??0 -
For what it's worth, I've been a tenant in several properties but have never had water including in the monthly rental cost, and wouldn't expect or want it to be.0

I too rent houses and are let to students on a weekly basis and include all bills in the rent. I spent a long while investigating how I could reduce the water bills and in the end went in and fitted a low flow ( or water saving) aerator at various flow rates throughout the properties. The modern taps were easy and just a case of screwing on a new fitting to the spout of the taps - I reduced the maximum flow from about 18 lpm to around 8 lpm in the kitchens and 4 lpm in the hand basins. The showers I reduced by fitting a 7 lpm shower saver between the shower head and hose, if there were a bath in the property I reduced this down to 7 lpm, again by fitting a low flow fitting to the spout. For my older properties where the taps had no screw fittings I put a reducer (an F-LP I think it was called) in the tail of the taps where the pipe joins. The fittings ranged in price from £3 - £8 each but paid for themselves in the first 6 months! An unexpected bonus is that the electric and gas usage has also gone down because they are only heating about half the hot water previously used. My last bit of advice, I did find that you can't cut corners, in the end I used Neoperl products that ended up working on everything as they compensate for any pressure variance so we didn't end up with a dribble when the tap was turned on. I started buying these items online from ebay before moving on to bugfish.co.uk who specialise in water and energy savings and they have a free energy savings calculator so I had an idea of savings before I even bought the stuff. I hope all this helps, I spent so long researching this I feel I have become a bit of a water nerd and I am always happy to pass on !0
