Charnwood Country 8kw MF stove

I have one in a place were renovating & occassionaly use it when there working. Made a lovely fire the other day but the airwash was stuck solid! I tried to open it when the stove was cold, to no avail, then when the stove was hot, again to no avail, and again when it had cooled!
How can I release it? Is it sfe to use WD40 on it?? Or is that a definate NO NO!!!
