    Seriously?

I do mines Fire and Theft but its closer to £200. (rural low crime area, 38 years old, 8k miles a year, 20 years driving, 13 years NCB)

What company does it for 40-50?

no mention of third party there so you couldnt take the car on the road.

He is talking about 'laid-up' cover.

Are you talking about TPF&T? ie including road cover?

The change in the law means, you will only be able to take your vehicle off the road and cancel your insurance by returning your tax disc to DVLA.
It must be returned on a V14 (application form for a refund of a tax disc) and SORN declared at the same time.

@Op: Are you sure you didn't do the above? It's not unknown for the DVLA to completely loose stuff sent by post and if read the following link you'll see they can't really do much to you if you have posted it:

Are you absolutely sure you didn't send your tax disc and refund form in the post?

Thank you everyone for the info. The car is a Subaru Impreza which was costing too much to run. The emissions are in the tax bracket of £445 per year. I guess my ignorance of the insurance requirement is my own fault so I will have to pay up. I have now declared the car SORN today so at least they cant fine me any further. I dont see however how I will sell the car if it is not taxed as no one will buy it if they cannot try it first. I will look up how much it will cost to insure it but my last quote was about £650 however that was insuring it to drive it.
  • OP you should also reconnect the battery once a month or so and start the engine up and let it run a little to let the oil circulate around the engine.Otherwise it can cause problems later on if left to stood for long periods of time.
Similarly don't leave the handbrake(use chocks) on and try and let it rest on different parts of the tyres(making sure they are still inflated) or they can flatspot.

... I have bought a diesel car which is insured in my name during the time the other car has been off the road ...(

then you are insured 3rd party on the other car (any other car)
When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?

I think this is any other car that doesn't belong to you- or used to be, as many insurance companies don't offer this service now to offer cheaper policy rankings on compared sites.

out of interest, why is the road tax so much? I've just paid £135 for a year and you said yours has been in the garage for a year so I'm failing to see why it was so much.

!!!!!!, what does it being in a garage have anything to do with the price of VED? LMAO if I put mine in the garage for 2 years will it be cheaper by the end? :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

You can get insurance like Fire and theft only... its normally quite cheap about £40-50 for the year?

Your talking about no third party just fire and theft with zero mileage, even then your figure maybe a little low and not every insurance company will offer that.

OP simply put the law changed a while back and every car either has to be declared SORN or has to have insurance no ifs or buts.
I have heard some people have been lucky claiming they sent back a SORN to DVLA and they "wink wink" obviously didn't receive it.

NO, the other car still has to have its own valid insurance policy.
You can't insure two cars with 1 policy (unless its a proper multi car policy). Your talking about insuring car A then being valid on any other car which isn't correct.

Sorry to say your in the same boat as most, you will either have to sell it where it stands and the new buyer will need to tax/insure it before driving it away or it will need to be trailered away.

Your other option is to put it back on the road tax/insure before you decide to sell it.
