Hi everyone

Due to illness I have not be able to tend to my garden this year so far and it seems to have become over run in some parts. Last year I had some help in identifying plants in my new garden and wonder if I can please call on your help and generosity again to try and identify a few cuplrits and one tree which I have no idea what they are?

I thought this might be some grass but when looking at it close up I'm not sure it is as I have no grass in my garden and it grew really fast in an area where I had my grow bags with my tomato plants on last year

this a close up of one of the little clumps of the above

Plant 3 has 'furry' leaves

This is a tree which is horrible and spikey in the winter but has lovely purple leaves and pinky/purple flowers now

Thank you for looking and your advice.

    I've been Money Tipped!
The Purple bush in the final pic looks like Berberis.
The first one looks like some kind of Currant.
The grass looks like it could have grown from seed dropped from a bird feeder?

    Plant 1 = Japanese anenome
Plant 2 - I know it, think I pull it out!
Grass is possibly a wheat/oat or similar grain - agree probably from a bird feed
    Agree with berberis

The top 2 photos look very much like the leaves of Japanese anemone. The red bush is certainly a berberis. I reckon the grass could be the infernal couch grass (sorry).

The grass looks so much like the annual quaking grass http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/117.shtml, I have loads of this and the leaves are identical. Definately an annual and NOT couch grass.

The first piccy looks a lot like a weed I constantly dig - have you cut off a flower spike in the 2nd photo and is it a sort of red spike flower?

Plant 3 - are the leaves scented?

Plant 4, definately agree with Berberis.

Plant 3 looks like yellow loosestrife, it will produce spikes of yellow flowers in the summer.

Thank you - it is quaking grass, I remember last year there was few little clumps of this at the back of the growbags - it has obviously self seeded very well.

Plant 3 - leaves are not scented.

    Thanks for your help :)

    Hi Mary
I agree 1 is japanese anemone, I love it for a bit of later season colour, quite slug resistant, but keep an eye on it as it will creep from where it grows. Easy to dig up the off-sets- and a nice present for your friends. I've got white ones, pale pink & darker pink, single and doubles.

Plant 2- sounds like you've sorted that one.

Hmm, plant 3, I don't agree that it's loosestrife....I have a borderline hardy salvia with similar shaped leaves that are a little furry. I'd keep an eye on that one, might be a keeper.

And yes, berberis, which is a swine to get out- really tenacious bright yellow roots. One worth keeping on top of if you want to keep it.

    Good Luck with it all:)

I've got the same berberis and I trim the ends off the branches every few weeks in summer to keep it neat and tidy. It's still going strong so I'm not harming it. Wear garden gloves though - it's a spiny little blighter !

:)Picture 3 looks like Daylily. I have these in my garden - it looks like a spider plant and in summer produces beautiful orange lilies which i deadhead every coulpe of days. I think you can get other colours. As i have saved the seeds from the pods anrd replanted them - they're all a vibrant orange colour. They do get bigger every year though and you can divide them and replant them.
