If that's the case I wouldn't put relocation twice! That would ring alarm bells that you won't settle anywhere.

Can you put career progression for your previous job, then relocation for this one?

Ugh, I never thought such a simple thing could get so complicated! I can't really put career progression as I went from a research assistant position to an office admin position. I primarily wanted to move from the academic route to the professional route, but my main reason for leaving was that I had to relocate for financial reasons.

As you were only in the job for 3 months, I am beginning to think that the previous one is the important one, which you need to explain leaving. And then frame the last one as a stop gap for which your plans went wrong.

I left a job back in March to move abroad to be with my partner. The relationship broke up fairly shortly after my replacement had been hired and trained, so there was no chance of going back to it.

    *puts hand up*

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

Just be utterly honest and tell people that you left your previous job to pursue a relationship overseas and that unfortunately, things didn't work out.

That's what I did when I was in that situation and no interviewer ever gave it a second thought.

As for application forms, you could always put that you left to pursue an opportunity elsewhere that unfortunately didn't workout (or was withdrawn, whatever).

That's not far from the truth, is it? ;)

BTW, if I can add a personal note I, I wish you the best of luck getting back on your feet.

It's a horrible situation but you will get there in the end :T

The only thing that is my personal bug bear in this area following a very short appointment is

    "better opportunity arose"

It always makes me think did they use as a stop gap? It can't affect the scoring of course but on a personal level I wish they'd chose more appt wording. Maybe it's just me but I can't help how I feel as a person.

    Thanks again everyone.

I have put down 'Travelling' as the reason for leaving the past job and 'Relocation' for the one before. I'm hoping that even if it doesn't look great, the rest of my application will at least get me an interview and I can explain more fully if they ask. The fact I was in the job before this past one for over 3 years will hopefully make things look a bit better!

And technically I was going travelling with my ex-partner for three months, it just didn't work out, which is what I will explain. These things happen and I have definitely learned my lesson!

If you get an interview try to turn it into a positive. Say about what you learnt while travelling. Also say that now feel you've had the travelling experience, you are ready to focus on your career again and really settle somewhere where you can work your way up.

'contract ended' always worked for me.
  • Thats quite interesting - I used to work two jobs and left them both at the same time (put 'relocation' on both of these jobs)

Maybe I should think about changing 'relocation' and using something such as 'University'???
