That's a good one - "my contract came to an end".

It's not a lie as the contract DID come to an end. The fact that it happened because you resigned doesn't need to be mentioned until they ask you, at which point you can elaborate about the travelling/relationship.

Of course that that point you are already in the interview and can turn it into a positive
