Not sure what you are asking here, you have an airtime plan , so simply buy the handset of your choice?

Please don't think I'm being rude, but if you're so ignorant about mobiles, why would you want to pay through the nose for an iPhone, when there are plenty other phones on the market that are just as capable at often less than half the price?

Hi Tony, I want the iphone to communicate and see my family who live abroad, if you can recommend anything cheaper, please tell me about them.

Use Skype from your PC, which is free for Skype-to-Skype calls. There's no need to use a £500 iPhone.

I think usual video-calling to/from abroad will be prohibitively expensive. To use Skype and similar you need internet-enabled handset. As many (all?) UK networks/tariffs don't allow using Skype, you are likely to want a WiFi-enabled handset.

That said, many smartphones have a front-facing comera and both mobile internet and WiFi. The cheapest cost just about £100 and will do all the job not worse than a £500 iPhone.

I'm in Tesco, which is o2, Skype certainly works over that, in voice mode, not sure about video, never tried it.

True about the iphone being not £400 better, but if the rest of the family have iPhones then the OP needs an iPhone as Facetime will only work to other Apple devices, be it iPhone/ipod touch or Mac's.

The OP needs to ask what they have, and confirm he and the people he wants to call (assume they have Apple devices) has a WIFI connection at home to use, Facetime only works over Wifi currently.

Skype is probably a better option to be honest, I use it more than facetime.
