late payers being unrealistic

I sold something on my private acoount on Tuesday and was going to open an NPB. However I received payment at about 4.30 pm yesterday just before opening the claim , so no problem except that there was also a message 'hi, any chance of getting this out today as I need it urgently for Wednesday'

I emailed back politely pointing out that my Post office was closed until Tuesday now due to bank holiday on Monday, and also that they had only opted for 2nd class and asked if they wanted to cancel (this is a 99p item).

This morning I had another email saying they don't want to cancel even though they will be a bit inconvenienced at having to get a replacement elsewhere (this is neither a new or useful item), but not too worry, just send it as planned as it is their fault they overlooked the fact that the Post office closed early on a Saturday.

Not an apology for paying late, or any explanation. More worrying though is that they seem to think paying at 4.30 in the afternoon on an auction whose terms are 'shipping in 2 working days' would automatically equate to shipping same day. No wonder we have problems with buyers thinking goods are late when they are not.

Yes, just reply politely, loads of these kind of buyers on eBay, who want something yesterday, they pay peanuts for postage, but want express service.

Just smile and say "leck mein a..lock!"

I find the more worrying the email the politer I get, sort of a reverse strategy for dealing with awkward buyers.

Sounds like a relative of the woman (with 12 feedback) who bought something for £17.99 plus postage. My item description says I will accept cheque/postal orders or paypal.

She pays by cheque after 4 days on the Friday last week, I received it in the afternoon. I bank the cheque and tell her I will post as soon as the cheque clears. This is not good enough she says when she emails to complain on the Monday.

She said the cheque cleared Sunday, which is impossible. I check the bank and it cleared on Thursday afternoon, so I post it by 1st class recorded on Friday, (I paid the upgrade to 1st class, as she paid for 2nd class postage)

Now I have a positive with a row of 1 stars and a comment that she had to chase me as I was slow sending her item. Asked ebay but they won;t remove the feedback. Going to try again next week.

I find cheque payers to be particularly impatient, they seem to expect things the day after they post the cheque.

For lower end items on the rare ocassions I get a cheque I just send the item and hope for the best.

To be fair, the buyer didn't "pay late". But the delivery expectations were unreasonable.

I used to send the parcel when I got the cheque, but they I had 2 cheques bounce, both were for under £5.

So now I have a strict policy, cheque clears before I send the items.

I wouldn't dream of expecting a seller to post a parcel until they have their payment, seems like some buyers think they rule ebay. Ooops, they do.....lol

When accepting cheques, to make sure the buyers know, put it in advert with the payment conditions, this stuff is not rocket science!

Cheques require minimum X days to clear, whatever you decide to use!
As a seller you have to cover all your bases!

Tell me about it! I had an item end on the 27th April, and they said they can't pay until next friday! Why do people buy things when they don't have any money...

    It's beyond me!

I had that too with an expensive item. The buyer was in Australia and he won the auction about 4 or 5 days before the postage costs went up.

Before I sent an invoice the buyer sent a message that he would pay in 2 weeks when he got paid, I replied saying that Royal Mail were increasing postage in a couple of days and I advised him what the new cost would be.

He didn't reply but he paid immediately so as I had given him the new postage costs I had to refund him £3.+

He never thanked me for the refund neither.
