Thanks for the comments guys and vax2002 for your word,

I will bare that in mind. So when the police/vosa call to want the vehicle I need to say no and ask there address to write them off a letter post haste.

i think i would be seeing a solicitor who is up to speed on vehicle theft and duped owners because following vaux's advice although it might indeed be sound would tend to suggest to me you would be arrested

Vax2002, I'd playing hard ball something you have done or know people have done with success.

I agree it might not be prudent if there could be such consequences

What sort of car and what's tgdtagd me it?

There's a good chance the ecu will disclose its true identity.

It was a ford fiesta zetec

I don't know what you mean by tgdtagd

If the ecu doenst identify it, is something else going to almost certainly? As bad as it sounds, is it worth me swapping the ecu or something- I'm out of pocket to the tune of £3400 - a lot for me, the owner won't be at a loss with insurance payout and the insurer will be at a substantial loss anyway when they try to auction it

If it was stolen with keys the owner may not have been paid out.
  • How come they won't have web paid out if it was stolen with keys? The seller had on key, you can only assume this was genuine

the owner won't be at a loss with insurance payout

But he will have lost his no claims bonus, will have suffered inconvenience and probably ended up with a car which wasn't as good as the one you now have.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Yep, but assuming the car can be identified and the original owner was paid out on a theft claim then his NCB is gone and isn't coming back.

The question now is the best route forward for the OP
