central heating

Just moved into our first home and we need central heating fitted. the house only has 2 storage heaters which are not great. We have a water tank in the dinning room. We will need 6 radiators and a boiler, anyone give us some advise on where to go for it and who does the best deal? thank you

Ring up a few local suppliers to you and for a laugh you can always give british gas a go.

The running costs of 6 radiators will cost more than the cost of running 2 storage heaters so do not expect a saving on your bill.

    Does the property have gas?

i know it won't cost less but them heaters don't really do much at all. No heating up stairs at all at the moment. i HAVE E MAILED BRITISH GAS for advice and that. Yes it does have gas its a weird little house though it even has a pump system for the shower.

Heating upstairs in a small house does not need to be very extensive as you are sleeping most of the time when heating is not required to a high level. An smallish oil filled radiator and a more powerful electric convector heater for an early morning boost on the E7 tariff and for a short period in the evening as you are getting into bed will be all that is required. I use an 800W oil filled radiator in the bedroom and leave it on all the time that I am in the room. It keeps the room reasonably warm for little cost. I use the 2kW heater for 10 minutes for a boost of heat before getting into bed and as I wake up to get the room temperature higher. I also use an electric blanket and have no need for the gas central heating upstairs at all. The cost is about the same as heating the whole house with the gas central heating but why heat downstairs when you are upstairs and why heat upstairs when you are downstairs.

Could you install a modern high efficiency gas fire in the lounge? Do you have a fireplace? They don't cost very much and will save quite a bit compared to using peak rate electricity in the lounge.

It's just my own personal opinion. I think that gas central heating is way overrated. My electric bills in a 3 bedroomed house are extremely cheap. I am rarely cold as I only use heating when required and never on timer. It is only really chilly when I get home on a cold winters day and the heating hasn't been on before I've arrived as gas central heating would. I oculd resolve that by buying a timer. I have a gas boiler which currenty is broken and therefore never used. I could fix it but I can't see that any savings can be made.

Do you actually have a mains gas supply to the property? If not. then that will be the most expensive part of the process (assuming that you can get it at all).
Then get quotes from 3 local independent GSR RGI's.

Depending where you live expect around £3500-£4000 for a quality boiler and system.
