Why can't I get a toaster that works?!

Just a general rant really........we've bought no less than 4 toasters from 3 different retailers in the past year and every one has broken in some way within a couple of months and had to be returned. :(

None of them was the cheapest of the cheap - mid range I suppose because we mistakenly thought that a fairly simple sort of appliance would last a few years with pretty light use, but they've all turned out to be absolute cr ap.

There's no way I'm spending £150 on one of the really posh models; can't justify that in any way for a piece of cooked bread.

My mother has had her toaster for nearly 40 years and it's still fine - I'm seriously considering looking on eBay for a 'vintage' one strange as it sounds. :o

Am I just unlucky?

I think you're unlucky getting so many failures in such a short space of time but toasters do seem to be unreliable and several people I know have gone through a two or more quite quickly before getting one that works for years.

I agree that the expensive ones are no solution. Some years ago my mother purchased a Duralite and it failed after a few months.

We were looking at the Dualit ones, but for just a couple of heating elements in a metal case, they seem a ridiculous price - hope your mother got a refund! :)

We'd use the grill in our oven but it incinerates toast in seconds, and as for sticking a slice on a toasting fork into the woodburner, well, talk about ashes to ashes...

We had this with kettles. 5 in succession packed in after only working for around 3 months. We continued to take them back to Currys and exchange for a different model of the same(ish) price (around £50). We finished up with a deLonghi which has been bubbling away now for a year without trouble. All I can say is: when I next need a new toaster, it'll be of the same make - whatever the price. It's cost us more on petrol running back and forth to Currys than it would have if we'd just spent the extra few quid in the first place.

£50 seems a lot for a kettle. My last kettle was a Russell Hobbs which cost around £30 and lasted a couple of years. My current one is a Tesco own brand that cost around £15 and has lasted two years.

The Russell Hobbs was a nice kettle but had a fault with the lid. Several members of my family had one and they all went the same way after 2-3 years.

Our Russell Hobbs kettle has been going for about 6 years.......of course that's the kiss of death to it now. :(

I won a Dualit toaster in a competition donkeys' years ago. It's the best toaster I've ever owned, works brilliantly every time.

    Hope you find something suitable.

I would second a Delonghi toaster too. Had ours for around 6 years, still looks really good and perfect toast.

    Hello Fluff! :)

I like 'hotel toast'; you know, quite cold when you butter it, so send me a couple of dry slices through the post would you? ;)

I paid £10 for my toaster four years ago from John Lewis. Works fine.
