Lloyds - closed account so no access to statements

For various reasons - including very slow repayment of mis-sold PPI -I have moved both my current accounts from Lloyds, and those accounst have now been closed. (I have a savings account, and a cash only account with them that I have kept open).

I don't receive paper statements on any of the accounts - and do everything online; however, I can no longer see the statements for the closed accounts. (as I discovered just now when I had to query a payment)

I have rung Lloyds, to ask how I can access the statements, only to be told that this was not possible!

Apparently, if I have a query, I have the following options:
1. I can ring Lloyds with the date of the payment I am querying, and they can look on their system for the information
2. I can request paper copies of all the statements on both accounts - which will cost a fortune.

Is there any way I can get round this? By law, I believe I have to keep statements going back 7 years, but how can I when they won't allow me to access them?

Grrrrr....... it's precisely this attitude that caused me to move the accounts in the first place.

Seems option 1 is your only option now, because you closed the accounts.

It seems to me that Lloyds are trying to be helpful but they probably can't un-do your closing of the accounts - - though did you ask them whether they could? There wouldn't be any downside if you kept the accounts dormant.

There is, btw, no law on how long a private individual has to keep current account statements.

I would think that if you were NEVER given a paper copy of the statement (because you went paperless) you should be able to get it free. After all, that's what happens if the accounts were still open. If you wanted to make the point even clearer, you could explain that the charge is for 'duplicate' statements - it's not a duplicate because you never got the original.

Worth a punt - they might say no but would seem harsh.

Withdrawing your online access is part of closing your account.. it's standard... I'm sorry for you that the bank didn't point this out. But I wanted to point out that it's fairly routine for this to be the case - in this instance, it's not Lloyds being overly problematic... i'm sure they have their failings which are specific to the bank (I'm not a huge fan of the banking group myself - wouldn't touch Lloyds with a bargepole based on my experience with other parts of the group) but this isn't one of them.

You really expected online access to statements on a closed account? Really?!!!!

Pay for copy statement. Irritate them with a DPA SAR. Or ring when you have a specific query.

You had the option of moving statement information to an excel file or similar when it was issued. You chose not to. Is that the bank's fault?

The options the bank has given you are reasonable. You could have printed or downloaded all of your statements whenever you wanted to. You just chose not to bother.

Ring them, tell them you went paperless and you need the statements now.

The adviser should not charge you as you never had the statements in the first place.

The advisers can send the statements free of charge.

Raise a concern if they don't do it! You spoke to someone who didn't know what they were doing.

It works with Nationwide. I closed an account and received a letter confirming that the account is closed. However, I can still see it on online banking. I asked them why and they said "So you can access your past statements". I keep all transactions locally, but its a nice touch (the accounts don't show up if you request a transfer or payment, so you can't accidentally open them again).

But yes, if you never received statements you should be able to request them for free.

Would a subject access request (costs £10) get copies of all statements? I don't know if statements are included in an SAR but it might work.

Probably but more likely to be a screenshot of all the account details rather than official bank statements.
