DSLR Camera Warranty

I just brought a DLSR camera from DigitalRev.com (Nikon D7000)

Now the delivery was second to none :T, but when I got the camera and opened the box I cant not find Nikons warranty card which means to DigitalRev.com the item is used and there is a 15% restock fee,

Also due to this I cant register for a 2 year warranty that Nikon UK have, I contacted DigitalRev.com and they keep saying we do not say its a UK Product and point me to there terms and conditions and said they removed the warranty card so there is no confusion even though on there site is says Worldwide Local Warranty?

Where do I stand as they say I can send it back but I have to pay postage and the 15% restock fee?

:(

This company is based in Hong Kong so you don't have any UK statutory rights, such as DSR or SOGA nor a UK warranty. So yes, if you want to send it back then you will probably have to pay their restocking fee, that's if you get back any refund at all.

    Is that true?

I thought that if a company was targeting UK customers, then they should abide by UK law.

Only ask as I'm unsure myself.

How is that going to work then?

If Mr Hongkongtrader fails to deliver the goods, how do you get him to even answer the complaint?
And if the court finds against him, how do you get your money?

Was it delivered from Hong Kong or a UK warehouse? The reason I ask is because if it was delivered from Honk kong then what made you think it was a UK product in the first place. This would be classed as a grey import, email Nikon UK with the serial number, they may be able to offer the warranty from the date it was manufactured.

If it was delivered from a UK warehouse then DSR does apply, but getting them agree to that is a different matter.

Edit, just had a look and it is Hong Kong based, You are lucky you didn't receive a customs charge for it, or will one come along?

Even if you had the original Nikon warranty card, you wouldn't have been able to register for the 2 year warranty.
How to register for the Nikon 2 Year Warranty

This promotion is applicable to Nikon compact cameras, digital SLR bodies and digital SLR kits.
To take advantage of the extended warranty you must be a resident of the UK or Republic of Ireland and are required to register the product within 30 days off the purchase date shown on the receipt. The camera or kit must have been distributed by Nikon UK & Republic of Ireland

I have no idea, hence why I asked the question.

The reason goods are often cheaper from other countries is because they do not have the consumer protection we do :) So personally, I always take this into consideration when buying from abroad. If its a huge saving, i'll probably still buy. If its a minimal amount, I would rather buy here for that extra peace of mind.

It will usually state in the terms and conditions on a website about which counties laws the contract is governed by. A lot of people dont look at terms and conditions because it can be lengthy. All you really need to look at is a) governing law b) at which point the contract becomes legally binding and c) their returns procedure.

Once you get into the habit of checking, it only takes a few seconds as you get to know what to look out for (as signs for possible trouble if things go wrong).

    9. Warranties

Unless in the case where the goods come with their own international or worldwide warranty or stated clearly otherwise, all goods sold by DigitalRev Limited on the website carry a 12 Month DigitalRev Warranty.

If the buyer wishes to make a claim under this warranty, the buyer shall give written notice to DigitalRev within 30 days of the discovery of the defect and give DigitalRev reasonable opportunity to inspect the goods in question.

DigitalRev shall not be liable for any damage if the buyer makes any further use of the goods after giving notice, or if they alter or repair the goods without permission from DigitalRev.

DigitalRev's liability under the warranty shall be limited to repairing or replacing the goods in question, or refunding the price of such goods.

Peace of Mind with Local Warranty & Door-to-Door Warranty

With every purchase, we offer two types of warranties for free.

    1. Worldwide Local Warranty

Simply send your product to a local authorised service centre to obtain a repair estimate. Send the estimate to us for approval (we check if the repairs being carried out matches the problems described, and also make sure it is covered by the warranty terms and conditions, e.g. accidental damage is not covered).

Once approved, your product will be serviced and repaired with all the costs paid by us.

so theres no mention of it having the Nikon warrenty or 2 years.

When did you buy it? As it's not UK stock you won't get the cashback either, which is the current deal. This is exactly why camera manufacturers do cashbacks - to encourage people to buy for UK stockists, not get grey market goods.

That's the lesson that comes with buying cheap online - if it's cheaper than all the real shops, it's not UK. Sometimes people have to make that mistake before they learn not to do it again.

FYI for their guarantee - if it did go wrong in the first year I'd be worried about getting work done through them, you never know if a) they'll even respond to you and b) if they do, how do you know you'll get your camera back?

A couple of weeks ago I spoke to a lovely old gent who bought a Canon 7D online - he'd never bought on the internet before and didn't know the pitfalls, but everyone kept telling him he should so he followed their advise. Now the camera is faulty (less than 6 months after purchase) and now the company is ignoring him.

The reason that greys are cheaper is the labour costs for warranty repairs - it's alot cheaper to get a camera repaired in Hong Kong than it is in England ergo the UK repairers are not going to work on a camera that was sold cheaper because it was intended for a different market.

(Incase you want to know where I get my information - I'm a professional photographer shooting with a D700 and D80, I also work in an independant camera shop.)

  • Thanks for the info? and Cash Back did not worry me it was the two year warranty but looks like I'm out of luck (camera is fine though), also the reason I got it from this is the Nikon D7000 is in very low supply in the UK, Dixons is selling it at what I paid it for on this site but never have any stock?

P.S Dixon's dose not mention 2 year warranty on Nikon its on Nikons main site!

I just have to get camera insurance to cover the cost if any thing goes wrong, and again thank you for the info?
