Inconsolable dog after neutering!

Hi all,
I posted a week or so back asking for some info about after care for my dog after neutering and had some great advice.
My Coopers been neutered today and all seems to of gone well (even if they did charge me £7 for an elizabethan collar....)
My only concern is that he has not stopped whimpering since we got home. He's generally not wanting to lick it or anything, and seems more than willing to attempt to jump up the sofa which makes me panic every time - but every time he breathes out its a light whine and he generally just seems so unhappy.
No I know, if any man out there was to have what he has had done, I'm sure he would be whimpering too, I just wish I could make him feel better
The vets didn't give him any pain medication and I'm not somebody who would 'give him half a human asprin' as I feel its just not right.
What should i do? Is this whining normal? He's generally sleeping, shuffling, whining, and then sleeping again.
Been out for a couple of wee's and keeps farting which smells like death, but just won't go for a number two yet. (can't help but think of pregnant women after childbirth saying they are scared 'everything will fall out', I wonder if it's the same for dogs ey?)
I'm keeping him warm, fussing him, he's had some chicken, lots of water.....
Any advice would be appriciated. If he's still really whining tomorrow morning I'll be popping down the vets for some painkillers, although surely if it does hurt a little bit, he'll be less likely to jump around too much?
Oh I just don't know! Any advice would be greatly appriciated!

Aw bless him. My dog was exactly the same when he had his done. We were given painkillers though incase he needed them. I'd just keep your dog comfortable and keep him quiet, don't let him jump up if possible. He'll need to sleep it off but its good that he has eaten and is drinking.
My dog didn't poop the same night, it was a day later and he was shaking as he did.
I'd contact the vet in the morning if he is still whimpering. You really shouldn't be charged for a consultation and should just need to pay for some painkillers - check first though.
Best wishes, I hope he feels better soon.-Slimming World Challenge

How cruel, sending your dog home with no pain relief. When both my girls were done they had antibiotics and pain relief when they came home.
You must go and ask for some tomorrow if your dog doesnt settle.
As for your whimpering dog.. Well ive just had a couple of really bad nights with one of my dogs who seems to have pulled a muscle in one of her legs. She is better now but the first night all she did was whimper. I gave up my nice warm bed, put a blanket over me in the living room, turned the light off and watched television till daybreak with her curled up beside me. At that time, the only thing she needed (apart from painkillers) was me.
She has been out tonight for her first walk since she hurt herself.
I hope Cooper feels better soon. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I know how I would feel if it happened to me.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

Thanks both!
I know it's horrible but apparently it's common practice to not provide pain meds. I really hope he does feel better in the morning and really hope I don't have to sleep in the living room, but needs must.
I must admit, it's a little funny when he walks as he seems to have a large gap between his hind legs which is now very much empty:rotfl:
Thank goodness it's over and done with now though, it's taken my 3 1/2 years to bite the bullet and do it because I felt so guilty about putting him through it. Still wondering if it was really worth all this unhappiness for him, but I suppose it's the 'right thing to do'
No going back now!0 -
Oh the poor boy!
I hope he feels better in the morning.I'm not that way reclined
Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!0 -
I believe its defiantely the right thing to do. I had to have my dog done when he pee'd up up Mum's leg OMG how embarrassing. It cuts their chances of cancer and stops the roaming instinct looking for females.
Becareful about his weight. My dog put weight on really quickly afterwards and had to be put on a diet.
Here's a photo of him after his trauma just to show your not aloneHe soon got better too.

How is he this morning?
I hate it when my fosters are spayed or neutered but they are usually fine by the next day, then you have to try to keep them as calm as possible to heal when all they want is to play.
It will be worth it when he's recovered and you have a happier dog and no longer have to worry about certain health problems and the risk of wandering for females and unwanted litters.
I know you said they don't give meds and it's right that they don't send you home with any but he should have had an injection of painkiller before coming around from the op.
I hope he's back to himself soon0 -
The vet should've offered some pain relief for the poor little fella! Ring up today and tell him the dog seems really uncomfortable and so can they please sort some pain relief for him!0

His wimpering is more likely to be due to the after effects of the anaesthetic than pain. He'll be feeling confused & drowsy.
The wound is generally tiny &, while it may cause some discomfort, it's not usually "painful".
I'd be very surprised if he's not back to his old self after a nights sleep.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Did somebody come in this morning and full my dog with beans?
Other than looking peed off with having a cone on his head, he's absolutely fine.
He has already tried to perform a 'matrix style' run up the wall! Seems not to be bothered at all!
Not a peep all night either.
Thank you all very much for all your help and support! I'm off to turn some sofas on their ends!
