Typhoid vaccination

Options
Any side-effects with the above? Son is travelling on sunday and has not had it done. It's the one vacc. free. He had hepatitis A done in 2000 and they are asking for £35 to have first dose and then a booster, is this the normal charge? Thanks

It can bring on the symptoms of a mild dose of typhoid, which can be quite nasty, but it doesn't usually. Most people have minimal side effects from it (i.e. redness and sore at injection site). It is also supposed to be given at least 2 weeks before travel as it takes a while for immunity to build up, so if wants the vaccine he needs to get it done ASAP.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

Made my arm go a bit numb for the rest of the day, but nothing serious. Just meant I had an excuse to not do the hoovering/ironing/washing up etc ;)

My arm was sore for a couple of days (site swelled up like a solid egg) and I had a bad headache when I had my jab. I generally felt a bit achey and fluey.

Thanks a lot, I think he had left it a bit late as he is flying this sunday to Mexico and may be head off to guatemela (against my wishes). Just hope he will be ok as he has travelled across south east asia and india with no vaccination, very foolish in my opinion. The first time he had them all and then had some side-effects with malaria tablets and now is taking his chance by not having any. Thanks

hi all i had a really bad reaction to my typhoid injection i was very ill for about 4 days i thought i was going to die honest, will never go anywhere that recomends typhoid vaccinations again. Husband and children had their injections a couple of days before me (just as well as i wouldn't of allow my children to have it after what i went through)but they were all fine, just goes to show how things affect people differently.

Re reaction to Typhoid injection, we experienced aching arm only ( female adult and 2 teenagers)
As for the Hep A, we had it administered free at the GP surgery. They had supplies in the fridge ( this was December). We have been advised to return in 6 months for a booster which will cover us for 20 years!

If he goes to Guatemala make sure he has plenty of repellant. If he goes to Tikal, take care, there is risk of malaria there, I met someone who caught it. I had a safe trip there (on my own and am a girl!)so you shouldn't worry too much.

puffinmuffin, can you give him some advice about guatemela, he has bought a book. He is off to Mexico on sunday and have told him guatemela is out of bound, but you never know. Life is cheap in central america. He just bought a very expensive canon camera over £300+, hope he comes back with it. Also regarding charging MP3 player & digi camera, I am not sure which one to buy, pl can you advise. He is not taking any malaria tables as he had bad reactions before and I think he is going to leave typhoid as well. What vaccination did you have for Guatemala, how long did you stay there? What repellent did you use? I read vit b1 or b complex and avon so soft are good agains mozzies. Thanks

    Hi Lou lou,
I was working as a volunteer archaeologist in Mexico in 2005 and took a week to travel from Cancun to Guatemala via Belize. I only saw a very small part of the country so i am afraid i am no expert! I made the trip specifically to go to Tikal as the ruins there are spectacular. There are some mysterious charges at the border crossings, only USD1 or so. I stayed in the town of Flores. The town was friendly and safe and i met a lot of backpackers there. There are stories of robberies and bandits which worried me but i thought it a lovely country. I had all the hepatitis and typhoid jabs as well as taking the antimalarials. I was working in the jungle so used a very strong repellent with DEET. The general advice in CA is to travel on the 1st class buses, don't display wealth to openly and a little Spanish goes a long way! The electricity supply is the same as the US. Where in Mexico is he going?
