We've got three laptops and a couple of desktop PC's with a variety of operating systems and a wireless router. How do I go about setting up a home network ?

Any help gratefully accepted :)

What do you want to achieve? I presume each computer is connected to the router and the internet in the first place?

Do you want to share files, printers? What OS's do you have?

I would make one of te desktops your server.

Firstly, Set all to have the same "workgroup".
how you do this depends on which OS you have on each.

what do you want to use network cable or wifi?
Any hoo make sure they all are on the same network ie mshome/workgroup/anyotherword
setup the shares on each computer - if you want them to transfer files between each other.
Setup a printer - either a network one or connected to a computer.
    the list continues...
