Home network

I want to set my PC, laptop, wifes laptop and a printer on an internal network (ie so that we can share printer and folders/files).

I used to have this set up but have just formatted my PC and lost all the set up in doing so.

I have done all that I did last time to set it up (and it used to work like a dream for a few years) but for some reason that I can't phathom I have hit a brick wall.

I have XP on my PC and Vista on both laptops. Using the Wireless Home Network Wizard thingy I set up a network with all 3 comps. on (by use of a USB stick between each comp.)

On my PC I have then gone on to the Computer Name tab in "systems" and changed the workgroup name to match that that I have just set up on the wizard, and rebooted the PC (also rebooted laptops).

On PC I have then right clicked on several folders (one at a time obviously) and gone to the Sharing and Security line. In turn I then checked the boxes to allow both sharing and read/write access to the laptops.

When I then go to my laptop and click on Networks it shows my PC. It even allows my to doubleclick through that so as to display the names of the folders I have given permission to share.
However when you then try and click on any of those folders you get the following error message:-
"\\NAMEOFPC\Name of folder is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Not enough server storage is available to process this command."

Can anyone please shed any light on how I can gain access to my shared folders and what it is that I need to do ??

Sorry to bounce this, but I have spent the last 3 hours solid on Google trying to resolve this and it is driving me mad.

Was kind of hopeful that with some of the techies on here that someone would have an answer to what is probably a straight forward oversight on my behalf ?

All the things I read on Google are about playing with TCP/IP settings and I really am lost when I get in to all that ! Am getting deperate now though, just nervous about playing around with settings that I don't understand in the slightest.
  • THIS IS THE USUAL FIX: Make sure the same user accounts with the same passwords exist on all computers. For example if you have a user account "Dave" with a password "abc123", you need to create that account on all the computers.

    If that doesn't sort it....
On each computer, go to Control Panel, Windows Firewall and click on the Exceptions tab and make sure File and Printer Sharing is ticked.

On each computer, make sure they're in the same workgroup. On the Vista machines, go to the Network Control Center and make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled and that it shares with anyone with network access.

Make sure any third party firewalls are set to disable initially to rule them out. If it works, enable them one machine at a time and test.
  • Hi, Mr F

Setup your desktop PC and connect the printer to this. Share the printer when asked.

    Forget Wireless Home network thingy....

All PC's must be in the same work -- group, either mshome or workgroup. Using Accounts for each user??

You have a router with wireless connectivity?
Your PC XP? Server software or Win XP Pro?

Don't click on several folders and mess with the Security. No need. Shared folders are indeed shared by default.

Thanks, got all excited when I saw the bit about user accounts cos there is a difference and it was an avenue I hadn't tried - but no joy ! Thanks anyway.

THIS IS THE USUAL FIX: Make sure the same user accounts with the same passwords exist on all computers. For example if you have a user account "Dave" with a password "abc123", you need to create that account on all the computers. - Tried removing a password from laptop (which has same account name but PC has no password). Unfortunately no joy !

    If that doesn't sort it....
On each computer, go to Control Panel, Windows Firewall and click on the Exceptions tab and make sure File and Printer Sharing is ticked. - had previously checked this but checked again.

On each computer, make sure they're in the same workgroup. On the Vista machines, go to the Network Control Center and make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled and that it shares with anyone with network access. - ditto above.

Make sure any third party firewalls are set to disable initially to rule them out. If it works, enable them one machine at a time and test. - I switched off both firewall & anti virus on PC and 1 of the laptops, still no joy !

The most annoying thing is it must be just around authorisation as the laptop can see (and even displays) the folders that I am sharing from the desktop and will print remotely on the printer !!!!! (Just wont access the shared folders) !!!

I am growing old quickly tonight !

    Thanks again.

I had this once, except for the last sentence, gave up, turned everything off.

Next day everything worked fine, just a thought.

    Hi totalsolutions....
    Hi, Mr F

Setup your desktop PC and connect the printer to this. Share the printer when asked. - my PC has printer connected directly to it and I have set it up to share.

    Forget Wireless Home network thingy....OK

All PC's must be in the same work -- group, either mshome or workgroup (have set up my own workgroup but all comps are using and set to same workgroup - ie the one I set up). Using Accounts for each user?? - not sure what you mean here ???

You have a router with wireless connectivity? - yes
Your PC XP? Server software or Win XP Pro? - My PC is operating on Windows XP Home Edition and the 2 laptops are on Vista.

Don't click on several folders and mess with the Security. No need. Shared folders are indeed shared by default.

Makes hell of a lot of sense ! My brain is telling me you are absolutely right (as I am getting more and more frustrated as the night goes on) - just had to crack my 1st beer of the night to take the edge of it !

I have seen this a number of times, and it is usually a fairly simple fix. The problem is with the PC you are trying to connect to (not from), so in this case, your XP pc. It needs a registry tweak, so be careful, back up, use at your own risk, etc, etc.
    1. Start regedit.
    2. Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters.
    3. Double-click IRPStackSize (or if this registry setting doesn't exist, create it with type DWORD and ensure the case is CoRrEct).
    4. Change the base to decimal, set the value to 15, and click OK.
    5. Reboot the computer.
