Oil Tank Level Monitor

I've recently just bought a new oil tank and finding myself increasingly experiencing the occasional senior moment, have found myself running out of oil once or twice during the past few years.

The prospect of providing my local fuel distributor with direct access to my bank account via a Direct Debit agreement holds little appeal. So I've decided to invest in one of those little electronic oil tank level monitors, given the cost is less than the cost of calling out a plumber to reset the central heating system.

There appear to be two types on the market - Apollo and Oil Watchman. Both seem to be easy enough to fit and best of all, seem to be pretty idiot proof.

I just wondered if anyone has any experience of using these gauges or indeed fitting them, and was in a position to reccommend either of them?

Thanks in advance for your help

  • Hey i have got a sensor which attaches to the oil tank and sends a signal to a watchman plugged into a socket in my kitchen and gives you the oil level. I will check the name of it and the website for the company. They were really helpful recently and sent me out a sensor when my battery died free of charge.

They are not 100% reliable, delivered to a customer yesterday who phoned up to say she had run out of oil. The plug in one was flashing on 1.
She had a 2500 litre tank i put in 900 litres & filled her tank.

Your better off dipping the contents with a garden cane once a month, you get a far better idea of whats in the tank then.
if i had known then what i know now
  • Hi, this is very true watchmans are rubbish... however I found an even bigger saving by getting the Apollo oil level monitor from Commercial Fuel Solutions Ltd, a plce where the public can buy these things at trade prices, saving over 20% from the other prices! and thse are much more reliable... i've had mine for over 4 years and it has never mis led me yet.. all the best, Dusty:rotfl:
  • We've got one of the Apollo's - its okay for a general idea of your level of oil, but the receiver must be calibrated accurately, its calibrated using the height of your tank (in 5cm units). The transmitter sends a signal to the receiver that plugs inti a normal socket. Ours was fitted when we had the tank installed so I don't know how easy they are to fit retrospectively.

We have a watchman on ours (from previous owners when we bought the house earlier this year) and I have to say I just use it as a general gauge, I had the tank filled in May but the watchman settled on 8 so I was thinking we had been robbed, it tends to be all over the place tbh but not having had oil central heating before, I have no idea how else to check the level in the tank as it is only 2 years old and I don't know how you get into it???

  • Can anyone help me re: Oil Watchman and its display?

I work at my employer's house in the peak district and when she had her new oil tank installed, she also installed a watchman. Its only been in since the summer.

2 days ago, Watchman starting flashing up a 'c' on the display (it repeatedly goes 7,c,7,c,7,c,7,c..... etc) and the red warning light at bottom right is permanently on.

I can't find the instructions anywhere, either in our documents or online. Does anyone know what this c and red light stand for?

    Many thanks.
  • Hello you can get instructions for the oil watchman here. I think you need to look at how to reset the gauge on page 4

    all the best merry xmas
  • Had an Apollo Standard Oil Monitor 3 years, its now faulty and needs replacing. It has worked very well and was quite accurate so we will replace with the same model. We contacted Dunraven Systems who are the manufacturer they were very helpful in diagnosing the fault, you can download full pdf instructions from their site:search:
