I called Abbey re mortgage exit fees, They asked me to write to them but quoted a different Po box number to the one shown
It's Po box 287 Not 286
I know its only one out but thought it may make a difference.
Great article though.:T0 -

ie £95 at outset, but £250 at the point of redemption?
If it was, you should be able to request a refund of the difference.
If the fee was the same as you were quoted originally, your claim will not be successful.

Don't forget to use the Saynoto0870 site to get alternative number - it lists an 0800 number for the 0845 given in the table for Halifax. It works so they are now "looking into it". Fingers crossed!!0

Hi, just wanted to say a quick thanks to Martin. I sent off a relevantly edited version of the template letter to A & L last week regarding their £295 mortgage exit fee and received a prompt reply today containing the sentence....."in view of this I enclose a cheque for £286 which represents a refund of £195 plus interest at 8%". I have to say I am surprised and delighted at my success but have been brought back to Earth with finding the cheque was missing from the envelope. I'm sure it's just an oversight!0

I was charged £225 closing admin fee and £218.42 early repayment charge BY C& G to close the mortgage and switch to another provider, and when i phonedup to request a refund I got a letter saying they are unable to agree to thisbecause "the fee was applicable at the time of the latest mortgageadvance, it goes on to state section 1.10 of the FSA announcement"Fairness of terms in consumer contracts - statements of good practice onMEAF's and it defines the orginal charge as being the lawful amount thecustomer was told when they entered the contract or the latest point at whichthe contract was lawfully and bilaterally varied by the lender and the customer(eg a further advance or a product change)"
CAN ANYBODY PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS ONE PLEASE

C&G are correct. The FSA ruling was that you should pay the fee that was set at the time you took the mortgage out or purchased the last mortgage deal, if later.
So, if the contract said £225 was the MEAF and you paid £225 then you have been correctly charged. If they had charged you say £300 then you could claim back the £75 difference.
The early repayment charge is something totally different and there are no disputes or issues on those. A penalty for breaking the contract in a tie in period is very common in various retail areas and considered quite acceptable.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I have just received a cheque from Santander (Alliance & Leicester) covering the fee plus interest, thank you for the tip.0
