Micra Car Insurance

Hi all,

Today one of my main tasks is to look at car insurance quotes. Usually I use some comparions sites, then ring the company up to 'haggle'. I think I've got reasonably good at doing it, but would like to know if using a cashback site like quidco or something similar would save any money. Impressed by the knowledge on this site so would really like some help :)

It may save you money given it can be up to £80 but remember that cashback is never guaranteed so it can be a bit of a gamble if you chose not the cheapest up front provider in the hope that the cashback does come through

Alternatively of cause you could buy the best value cover rather than just the cheapest but thats probably too radical :)

    Yes, it certainly would.

I go through Quidco (you get a bit more with TopCashback) to their Car insurance site and note what the various companies' cashback is.

Then clear cookies (Shift+Control+delete) to ensure cookies are cleared (you'll need to relog in) and go to the comparison sites for a free £1 or so. Note which insurance companies come out best, which you would be happy to go with anyway, and compare against their individual cashback.

Clear cookies again and log-in again, and go via Quidco (or TopCashback) direct to the site you want, and just doublecheck it's the same deal - it should be...!

So I went with Aviva last year and got £60 or so cashback.

I just don't shop online at all (Boots, M&S, Holland & Barrett, Thomson etc) without checking the cashback sites and am about £1500 richer as a result (over several years, of course).

If you have a friend who is a member you can go via their referral link to join the cashback site and they will get a little bit of money for introducing you.

PS - agree that you should look at this as not being guaranteed, but if you have cleared your cookies before you go on to any site, it should register and you can submit a claim. I've not had anything (apart from some gambling things) not register.

I have evidently been a little more unfortunate with a fair amount not tracking. The other risk with insurance is if, like me, you need to transfer to the telephone then you may not get it (my vehicle has optional extras like metallic paint which some insurers websites are still too backward to be able to accept online)

Thanks for the replies- yeah that's the thing with me, I do like to ring up to ask questions you sometimes can't do online like 'do I have to send in my no claims discount etc'. The thing is, I know by ringing up you could well factor in cost of commission for the agent etc. I guess to an extent the voucher would work if I rang up?

If I cleared all cookies it'd clear EVERYTHING on my PC right? I have a lot of things stored which would make this a bit annoying but might do it if I saved enough money.

I have more succes with topcashback, quidco is more hit and miss. If you don't complete and pay online, they don't normally pay out. I usually use gocompare, and compare the market, select ones I like, (not always the cheapest), and then check the cashback. Normally there is at least £30 cashback on offer, although I got £60 on one, and £50 off the AA this year. It's worth going through the topcashback comparison site, as even insurers who don't normally offer cashback are on there.

Thanks I will give it a try- although it will depend on the cheap ones being on there. I guess I could complete online then ring up potentially although I'd prefer to ring up. This issue is quite important for me as I haven't got much spare money. Any other advice welcomed!

In that case the cheapest premium may be better for you, rather than the cheapest including cashback. Insurance cashback takes months to materialise (can be 6 even when there are no problems, often longer if a claim has to be made due to any tracking issues etc)

Usually 6 months, although 1 of mine took 15 months, and I lost one entirely when the cashback company went bankrupt. I agree on the cheapest here, but all things being equal go through topcashback comparisons site as well for a possible added bonus.

K thanks- I'm a member of quidco and may look at cashback things in future. Any tips for when I ring up? I usually ask them to give me the "cheapest legal quote" and get them to strip everything away, anything else I can do?
