British Gas Online Energy - Cancellation fee?

Hi

We are currently on Websaver 11 from British Gas which is coming to an end this month.

We have been offered the Online Energy deal from British Gas but does anyone know if this is a 12 month contract or can you switch at any time as it says there is no cancellation fee.

This seems the best deal around for dual fuel as they are also offering a £50 credit.

British Gas don't have cancellation fees on the new online accounts.

Since there is no early-termination fee, you can change tariff or transfer to another supplier, penalty-free, when you like.

I had a look at some of the details of this tariff on a comparison site but couldn't find any reference to a £50 credit - only something about Nectar points. Perhaps the £50 is offered to you, as an existing customer, by BG.

I trust you have used comparison sites to confirm this tariff is the best deal for you; if you haven't then I recommend that you do.

I'm in the exact same position as you, on Websaver 11 dual fuel. Yesterday I did some price comparisons and Scottish Power's Online Fixed Price Energy July 2013 came out cheaper than BG's Online Energy. Obviously, quotes were based on my personal usage, so your's could be different. I was offered the BG £50 too, but Scottish Power could save me £130+ annually, and if you go via TopCashback you could get £42.42 back aswell.

Shop around before you make any decisions :)

From my understanding of the BG website, the £50 is a discount received only if you elect to add EnergySmart metering to your tariff.

There have been reports on this site that BG smart meters are not compatible with other suppliers metering requirements so you may need to change the meter again if you ever want to leave BG. It is not clear who will have to pay for the meter change.

I would advise caution with this tariff - the discount structure seems quite complex (scroll down the BG web page referred to above to get the details).

Energysmart has b- all to do with Smartmeters, its a pay for what you use each month account with a free energy monitor.

Thank you for pointing that out so politely.

If you pay monthly by Direct Debit, how are you paying only for what you use?

You're paying whatever the Direct Debit allows them to take every month, which has "b- all", in your own parlance, to do with what you use each month.

Energysmart tarrifs require you to submit monthly meter readings (by phone text message or website), the monthly cost is collected by variable direct debit.

Ok. Thanks for that. I wasn't aware that energy suppliers used variable DDs. Sounds interesting.

No worries, more info on their website.

    http://www.britishgas.co.uk/products-and-services/gas-and-electricity/energysmart/how-energysmart-works.html?bgxlink_id=iymbii10027

I use it for my electricity account, but not gas.
