AOL Home Move..help!!!

I have been with AOL for 10+ years. I have wanted to change ISP for a while as I am not happy with their service. First of all they said I was under contract until November 12, so I will have to use them when I move house unless I pay £80 to break contract. Don't have that sort of money so I am stuck with them. Apparently I was tied in to a new contract after they gave me 3 months half price last year for being a "loyal customer", never once did they say this was tying me to an 18 month contract.

Moved house this week, contacted AOL when my BT telephone line was up and running. The home move department couldn't connect my internet for some reason, they put me through to sales after 10 minutes on hold I finally get to speak to somebody. He told me I could only get broadband re-connected if I took their home telephone package too. Told him I was not interested I only wanted the broadband reconnected. He then turned round and said that broadband is not available in my area?? I told him that what he told me was a joke, how could I magically have internet if I took their phone package but not if I only wanted broadband??? They are going to phone me back as it may be a "technical issue".

At this point in time I am sick of AOL, their customer service is shocking and the people on the phone are so rude. I feel like I should try to get the money to cancel the contract.

Are they correct in saying they can only connect broadband if I take their telephone package or is this just a con? Don't know what to do, I just know I want rid of AOL, they are like poison.

Can anybody help???

Could well be they want the full house like so many other ISP.
In other words internet is available if you take line rental, phone calls and a broadband package on a new contract.

Pay the £80 to get shut of them.
  • You should not have to pay anything to cancel with them. They are at it. Quote Ofgem, get in touch with your bank, create a trail. If you have been a customer with your bank for a good few years, contact them and advise them you have instructed your account with AOL to be cancelled and ask them to ensure the DD is cancelled, ask that they acknowledge this and state in this request because you are aware that AOL have been known to ignore cancellation requests and demand more money. Ensure your DD is cancelled and make sure your bank has instructions that no money can be paid to AOL without your instructions to do so. If AOL still try to get money out of you threatening you owe them - get onto Ofgem - they have had many complaints like yours - just get the hell away from AOL they are not a good company - and like you I was with them for over 10 years - fool that I was.

What I've posted in another thread recenty.
Have a look at my savings and do the maths for you and maybe it might be just as cost effective to change and pay the costs if you have to. Good Luck I hope you get it sorted

The update is that I received the hub this morning and got the call at lunchtime to say I could set up and it only took me 30 mins to set up and get online, very easy and simple and the speed is better too. Wish I'd done it years ago, now to get all the AOL junk of my laptop and it might just work better!

    Hi Guys
Bit long but I've included what I'll save from this switch at the bottom.

I've been with AOL since 1998 and paying £20.00 month. My service has been crap for the last few years and when I've had any problems they have been a nightmare to sort.
I've been too lazy to change (I'm not in contract). On Tues 24th decided to phone them for my MAC code (they wanted to try and keep me but I wasn't interested in any offers).
Got MAC code via email on Wed and letter yesterday.
I'm already with BT for phone. I picked them as well because of the number of wifi hotspots and they do say that they have many international hotspots too.

1.Went into BT website via Candis/Quidco site
    2. Selected package with free calls anytime for 12 months £129 up front line rental (£10.75 month) and broadband for £13.00 month on a 12 month contract.
    3. Getting hub and broadband set up on Wed 2nd all confirmed within 30 minutes via email of me taking the package.

    BT give £25 Sainsburys Voucher
    Candis/Quidco £20 cashback

My BT line rental was £17.50 month - now saving £6.75
AOL monthly was £20.01 - now saving £7.01

Total Yearly savings - £171.87 + £45 = £216.87 and this doesn't iclude the calls I would make over the year with BT (sorry couldn't be bothered to drag out my last years bills).

Free calls for the year mean I can now reduce my mobile package so I will save money there too.

    Hope this helps.
