    Hi

    If you went across the joists the floor would collapse !!! (although some have tried in the past i'm sure.!!)

    Pipe follows between the joists ( unless you have a section of ceiling boxed in downstairs.?)from toilet to soil pipe.

    By the sound of it you have cast iron all the way. Plumb1's angle grinder and timesaver coupling is the way to go.(very messy, lots of cast iron dust:eek: unless you damp down as you cut.)
