im doing the thomsons trip - 165 for the day - safer imo with everything thats going on at the moment
plus as a single female traveller i felt more comfortable doing it with them rather than booking with someone else over there
I think you are very wise.

We did this trip 2 weeks ago and managed to not get shot. did it by air as an excursion we booked in sharm. Boarding was a shambles at both ends. Trip was good, there are a lot of reminders of the political unrest but it isn't threatening, best not to go on a Friday as that's when there are protests.
Hassle at the pyramids was nothing like as bad as other places i have been
(Marrakesh, SE Asia) I guess it depends on what you have experienced before.. As another poster said, it's a living and tourism is down at the moment.

the flight was with air Cairo, not sure if they only do charters for the tour companies

I've done the coach trip (Sharm-Cairo) and its really not as bad as it sounds. We figured that in the end for the hassle it would take to book and do the air trip independently we may as well take a local coach tour.

Its really easy to book things in travel agencies there once you arrive whichever option you choose. Also much, much cheaper to book while you're there than book in advance here. Take GBP to pay with.

I flew to Cairo from Sharm on Egyptair. About 1 hour on the plane. Very easy and cheap to do. Buy a visa at the airport when you arrive at Sharm (using the bank kiosks NOT the travel agents kiosks). It should cost £10 sterling.
As previous poster says, avoid Fridays because that is when the main demos take place.
Yes you get hassle, it goes with the territory I'm afraid but just try to remember that these people and their families don't eat if they don't make sales and take it for what it is.
    Enjoy!
