Sharm el Sheik to Cairo

We are flying to Sharm in two weeks time for our first ever trip to Eygpt. May 21 to June 2nd.
We are thinking of flying to Cairo to do one of the pyramid trips and after reading around it looks like the coach trip will take some time so we are looking at cheap flights. Where is the best place to find these, also where is the best place to book in to Cairo for a one night stay as we feel to flight trips in one day could be too much.
Is it better to book out there or here? Many thanks in advance.

Stay in Sharm, although you can avoid the worst of the trouble in Cairo you'll still be constantly hassled whilst at the pyramids. Not my idea of a holiday!0

Cheapest internal flights I found were on the egyptair.com site but remember to select "country" as Egypt.
If you go independently you will need to keep an eye on the news just in case something kicks off while you intedn being there. Under circumstances at present, I think I would do an inclusive tour from Sharm as the agent will probably have more info on the situation than I could find out myself.0 -
The overnight sleeper trains are a traditional delight of travel in Egypt. Security is good, although personally I would only do this at the moment if I could join a tour group directly from the station in Cairo.0

im doing the thomsons trip - 165 for the day - safer imo with everything thats going on at the moment
plus as a single female traveller i felt more comfortable doing it with them rather than booking with someone else over there0 -
Check out Viator.com
I've not used them for a Cairo trip as have been there before (absolutely fantastic, especially the Museum and spotting how many people can get in one car!) but use them for activities - boat trips, quad biking - when in Sharm. Had a bad experience with a boat trip we booked through hotel once and will now only book thru Viator as they only use fully insured etc. companies.0 -

In which case you'll never travel to much of Asia either.
You call it hassle, they call it trying to make a living. If people bothering you for money puts you off visiting some of the greatest historical sights on the planet then why bother going to Egypt at all, just nip down to Benidorm like most people like you do.
Stop scare mongering too, http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/middle-east-north-africa/egypt has no restrictions in place for Cairo, just a few advisories.
Now to answer the OP question: http://www.seat61.com/Egypt.htm0 -
Ignore the scaremongers. Cairo is a perfectly safe place to travel to ! Yes, occasionally incidents can occur.....just as they do in any city in the world.
You've probably got more chance of being mugged or injured in your hometown on any given day as you have travelling to Cairo !
Typical prices purchased locally are approx £135 for the day trip by air.
You will also need to purchase a visa on arrival at Sharm (£20 approx) to travel outside of Sinai.0 -
They are but unfortunately the southern Sinai doesn't have trains!Voyager2002 wrote: »The overnight sleeper trains are a traditional delight of travel in Egypt. Security is good, although personally I would only do this at the moment if I could join a tour group directly from the station in Cairo.
Road & air are the only options unless you want to faff about with a ferry from Sharm over to Hurghada.0 -
Cairo is totally safe. I took the bus overnight, fell asleep and woke up there. Cairo is the most exciting and mind-boggling city I have been to, and I've been to a fair few. Check trip advisor there is a place called sharm excursions. start haggling, you'll get a deal. As for people hassling you, learn the arabic for 'sorry no' 'yes please' 'beer please' 'water please' and thank you. Pay in US dollars and whoa nelly you'll have a fine time. feel free to PM me anytime with specific questions.0
