Can someone tell me why, the same number plates you see on the DVLA website, can be bought for 2/3rds of the price if you go through a 3rd party website??

Is there some sort of catch?

Example -

My friend bought a number plate from a different site than the DVLA.

He saw the plate on the DVLA website for £700.

He bought the plate from another site for £200 total cost delivered.

Why is it so cheap on these sites?

Oh, he also got buy now pay 12 months later interest free. This is not offered on the DVLA.

What do you mean not the real DVLA website?

    Its the official DVLA website.

Then you have sites like 123reg. I will get the name of the site my mate got his plates off of.

Nearly every other car on the road these days has a cheap £250 DVLA plate. Just makes you look like a sheep.

If I was to get a personal plate I'd make sure I'd invest in a dateless one.

The true MSE way would be to change your name by deed poll to whatever number plate you already had. It costs nothing!

What re you guys on about? Why so much confusion?

The number plate AA55 ACE costs £815 on the DVLA website.

Now look at the price here -

    http://www.regtransfers.co.uk/main/searchs/searchresults.asp

The price is cheaper on other websites aswell.

My friend, for example, got his plate through another website which was NOT the DVLA. It was not a private plate like the one you pay thousands for. It was one of those ones you can buy off the DVLA and also another site, like he did!

It was a S Reg plate! Never before been issued!

Regtransfers is offering the plate at £679?

That's not cheaper as it doesnt include VAT or the transfer fee that the DVLA include in their price

    Total price: £894

so £79 more expensive than the DVLA
