What about Malta. Personally, I wouldn't pick Cyprus. It's not particularly pretty apart from in the mountains, and it's expensive.

^^What I meant by that was we wouldn't be able to afford to pay for everyone to go further than Europe, as we wouldn't expect people to pay for themselves! The main reason we do not want it here in the UK is for the weather, and we would love the type of photos you get with a wedding abroad.

Pardon my ignorance, but what type of photos do you get with a wedding abroad, that you don't get with a wedding here?

I can just about see the point with the weather - as long as you accept that you're just increasing your chances of getting better weather, but there are no guarantees.

But, I'm not getting what you mean about the wedding photos.

You can have a beach wedding in Scotland. Can't guarantee the weather though. Although, with the exception of this year, April has been gorgeous in my area for the past five years.

My daughter got married in the Caribbean but gave everybody plenty of time to save as we all paid for ourselves. They did have a party back home for those who couldnt go, but I don't think that the norm is to pay for friends and family yourself!

Also you'll get good weather in the Greek Isles, Cyprus, Crete in April... but you can get good weather in April in the UK too sometimes! (not this year though!!)

I also would only be paying for those who really couldn't afford to go themselves maybe like grandparents or something... Ultimately marrying abroad brings with it the possibility many of people you perhaps would have there in the UK simply wont be able to afford it and so wont see your day - even if you did want to pay for them all to come, how hard is that going to be making sure they all get time off etc.

Personally I would leave it as an open invite and those who want to and / or can afford to will book up if it's reasonable enough, then just have a reception or something when you get back.

I think Daybreak featured the first beach wedding in England recently, Bournemouth wasn't it; might be a cheaper option!

Also, those beautiful beach pictures don't show you the sunbathing 20stone German bloke in a thong sprawled out 10 feet away! You can't close most beaches for a wedding so you end up saying your vows in front of loads of topless women, sunburnt blokes and kids making sandcastles.

Haha, ain't that (sometimes) the truth? :rotfl:

During one wedding we saw taking place in Mauritius last year one of the wedding party actually had to ask all the nosey sunburned people to move out of the way as they were blocking the person trying to video it!

I've been to the Algarve in early April and it was lovely. It's also very reasonably priced - though i'm not sure about the legal requirements to marry there.

France is a no-no, unless it's a blessing you're after, due to the residency rights.

Italy is fine and very marriage friendly. We were on the Ligurian coast at easter this year, and it was warm and sunny, but not hot. You don't need to be a resident to marry there.

Switzerland is another possibility from a legal point of view - but you will need to do a lot of paperwork! (We live, and got married in Switzerland). It's also an expensive country.

Germany is lovely - i love the people, the countryside is beautiful, but of course it will likely have weather like in the UK - probably colder!

is it cheaper to fly folk out to the wedding destination of your choice in April, compared with say May or June? Just thinking, you've generally got a higher chance of better weather in those months, compared with April.

Was also going to suggest Malta - I've just come back from a week there and the weather was really nice and warm. As far as I'm aware there aren't any major legal hurdles for British couples to marry there either (there was an article about it in one of the free tourist mags).
