What would you do if.....

your brother was supposed to buy your lottery ticket, spent the money instead, and your numbers came up (not the jackpot, but five numbers which would have paid £3k+)?
A lady at our gym has unfortunately found herself in this position. She has been playing the lottery for a few years and in January, while in hospital, asked her brother to buy her tickets for her. He sometimes plays online and so simply added her numbers to his playslip. They then agreed that he would play the same numbers for her every week, and she has been giving him the money to do so - £10.p.w. A few weeks ago she got five numbers - and thought she had won £3k, but brother then confessed (or claimed as she is not sure if he did play them or not), that he had not been buying the tickets - money was tight and he has been spending it on himself. She is understandably livid, and he doesn't seem to think it's a big deal - ''it's not as if she won the jackpot''.
He has offered to give her the £100 or so that she has given to him to buy the tickets over the past few months, and apparently her family all seem to think that she should be grateful for that! She's in her 20's and he is 19.
I think I would kill him. What would you do?

Hm Id be wondering if he won and pocked the money himself...0

well to be honest, with the lottery and all that sort of stuff, you've not actually won anything unless you've bought a ticket. She didn't buy a ticket, therefore she didn't win anything.
Yes, her brother should absolutely give her all the money back that she gave to him to get her lottery tickets, when he didn't.0 -
I'd be angry at him for not doing what he'd agree to do, but I'd also be kicking myself for not checking up to make sure he'd been doing it!Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0

I'd be kicking myself that I was too lazy to buy my own ticket."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

I wouldn't trust him with anything important again, but he only owes her the money for the tickets.
This is also why its a good idea to get lucky dips, then you don't become a hostage to your numbers!0 -
I'd take the 100 quid, then kill him. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

Would I trust my 19 year old brother to buy my lottery tickets reliably every week? Absolutely not!
I'd be furious with him but I wouldn't be entirely surprised, and I think getting the money back off him that he's spent on himself is the most i could reasonbly expect. Then I'd go ahead and batter him - joining the end of a long queue by the sound of it.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Who knows if he had bought the ticket, whether those numbers would have come up anyway!?
Anyway that is why you should never use the same numbers.
He should definitely give her the money back though!!0 -
I don't think there is anything that can be done. If he has offered to give her the money back, she should take it.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

Not quite. I think 5 numbers only actually pays about £1200 - I know 2 people who have won it.but five numbers which would have paid £3k+
What would I do? I don't think there is a lot that i COULD do. Be pretty miffed at my brother but it's just one of those things, you'd have to get over it. Not worth a life long family feud, is it?
This is one of the reasons that I think putting the same numbers on every week is a bit daft - you would be kicking yourself forever if you didnt manage to put them on, then they came up. Lucky dips all the way!0
