rather than staying in Inverness (parking can be a bit of an irritation in the city) I'd pick somewhere like Drumnadrochit or Lochend (on the shores of Loch Ness). The roads are fine and well signposted all around the area. We visited family in Inverness last month and played tourist while we were there. The Loch Ness area scenery is absolutely stunning. If the weather had been better we'd have gone out to the fairy glen and Nairn beach too. Culloden visitor centre was interesting for me (I'm Scottish but not from that area) but its expensive. The Loch Ness exhibition centre walkthrough is very well done, I really enjoyed that.

The West Coast is spectacular but Fort William is dire. There is lots to do and see in and around Inverness. The Loch Ness Cruise is well worth doing http://www.jacobite.co.uk/

I would suggest you travel via Pitlochry, where you could visit the hydro electric station, fish ladder and the smallest distillery in Scotland. http://www.edradour.co.uk/index5.html

Have now decided to stay at the Corrigour Lodge, Spean Bridge. Looks like it is in a beautiful setting, isn't too big, provides good food, and is a good base for travelling about. Looking forward to seeing a bit more of Scotland.
