New Bathroom - quote is £4.2k just for labour!

Hi All,

First time on this site but really need some advice please. We are getting a new bathroom installed and have received a quote that seems quite expensive. Its £4200 all in (removal of old bathroom, installation of new toilet, sink, shower, radiator plus all the tiling). This is about £1000 more than we were expecting.

The basic quote is £3400 (10% discount if we pay in cash), but the small print says there will be another £600 on top for 'builders materials' and £200 to dispose of the old bathroom.

We are buying all the materials for the bathroom and tiles separately.

Bathroom is 2.5m by 1.7m and we live in SW London.

Many thanks,

Londonsaint

does seem like a lot if your buying the materials seperatley, Is this the only quote you have? how many days work have you been quoted for? does the quote include the removal of existing tiles from the wall as this can be a mit time consuming? does the £4200 cover any patch work that may be required when the tiles are removed from plaster board or will you be charged extra for that?

This Is why im fitting my own bathroom, costs down cost down this end can be rediculous

    Thanks for your reply Tripp.

It is the second quote we have received. The first was from B&Q at £3700 which we also thought was too much!

The estimate of days work was 10-12.

The quote does include removal of existing tiles, yes.

I have tried to copy and paste the quote here (removing names of course), although not sure this is legible!!

if you do some of the jobs such as removing the tiles yourself you can save on costs but if you want the full job done then I would deffinitely shop around for more quotes from local independent fitters as some of those costs seem extremley high (places like B&Q are known for rediculous install costs)

interesting that they only gave you 3 days to accept this quote...

No its too much. Job like that should be £ 1500 - £ 2k labour plus £500 - £ 800 materials to including tile addy and grout.

Taking the tiles off yourself is a bad idea. It will take you ages, you'll hold the work up and more than likely damage the walls so that your price will have to go up to cover repairs. In the long run you will save nothing. I can strip an average 30's semi's bathroom's tiles in an hour or so using the correct tools. In the long run you'll save absolutely nothing.

If tiles are fixed to plasterboard now it WILL need replacing no question and there should be no question of extras in the price because it needs to be replaced.

You obviously haven't worked how long its going to take you to do the job in hours which when multiplied by your hourly rate from your day job (less deductions) will show you that its probably going to cost you more money than if you hired someone to do the job. Of course you get the satisfaction factor but thats not what the question is about.

    Cheers

Get a quotation for all the works. 10% discount for cash..interesting. SW Londoners will pay a premium. Third quote for comparison from trades recommended to you by a source you trust.

For a professional quote, this last section seems rather haphazard to me... Eletrical (sic) stuff?
The respond have to be given...???

Anyway, I'm also looking into replacing our bathroom, and went to B&Q too. They told me I was massively underestimating the cost, and gave me one of their cost sheets. £3K installation costs.

I'm looking to spend no more than £3-£3.5K

this breakdown of costs is way too high, even for sw london. £470 to paint a small bathroom that has partially tiled walls, come on!!
£70 to fit your cabinet!! says something that even B&Q's exhorbitant installation costs they still came in significantly cheaper.
i would suggest you get other quotes. the spelling and wording of your quote does not appear very professional.

10-12 days @ £300/day for labour works out about right from where I am sitting.
