The optical drive is probably a very cheap part of the overall price of a computer! The MBAs are also not large enough to accommodate an optical drive.0 -

That's right, C_Mababejive. It doesn't have a printer, a scanner nor a kitchen sink built into it either.
It's stripped down for the purposes for which it's intended to be used. That's what makes it small, light and thin. Which is why people buy it.
If you really want an optical drive, you buy a Macbook Pro, instead.
Or use a lightweight USB2 portable DVD drive.
That said, I've probably used the DVD drive in my Macbook Pro about a dozen times in the last five years.
What it's about, C_Mababejive, is being intelligent enough to understand that not everybody wants exactly the same things as you do in a computer.Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance

Remember Sony? They used to sell similarly diminutive machines for more than twice as much.0 -
Topic title: "MacBooks... cheaper to own?"
Yet you've just spent £1900 on one? And you're justifying it by saying, after two years (so a cost of £950 per year) you could buy a new one discounted?
I could quite easily buy a PC for £350-400 that does the same. It wouldn't need a warranty because if it ever broke, I could buy another one, and repeat that four times before I spent as much as you have.
A more likely scenario would be an annual cost of £100-200, based on, well, every PC I've ever owned ever.
Either this entire thread was a troll or you went into PC World after downing half a bottle of vodka.
No, seriously. £1000, fair enough. Wouldn't go for it myself, but meh. Nearly £2000 on a finance deal? A capitalist's dream.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”

Apple care shouldn't be purchased until month 11 after buying your Mac, you have 12 months warranty and you can purchase applecare on any purchase in the first 12 months. This means you get an additional 11 months free.
Thats if you decide AppleCare is worth it, I have my reservations and my family has a mac air, 2 iPads and 2 iPhones.0 -
I have decided to stick with the entry-level 13" Macbook Air simply because of the higher screen resolution and my "not" needing an optical drive.
I went to PC World in Tottenham Court Road (in London) today and got one. with the retail price of £1099 (and the £199 Apple Care for 3 years) i only paid £79+ today. why? because i availed and was eligible for their Infinity Cover/Insurance hybrid plan. i needed only to pay that amount every month for the next 24 months and on the 24th month i will be eligible for a 25% discount off a new-model Macbook (Air or Pro).
If you work it out (compared to the £1099 product price and the £199 Apple Care) i paid slightly higher but the good thing is the 25% discount and it covers almost everything like fall, water spill, theft and loss unlike Apple Care.
Can someone tell me this a good deal and if Yes then please feel free to spread the word....:-)
What if the retailer gets taken over or goes bust, who honour's the discount.I'm retiring at 55. You can but dream.0 -
Just to make things clear I DIDN'T pay £1000+ in one go for a MBA. I only paid £79+.
The Apple Care cost £199 and it's not "free". The "free" 2 years cover from John Lewis (and the one being sold by Apple) does not include theft & loss which PC World has.
For the 3rd time YES I will be paying £500+ more but the benefits are there. I spent over 1 hour asking things and verifying this with the people at PCW.0 -

Why does it matter whether you paid it in one go or not?
You've committed yourself to paying £1900 for the laptop.
Can't see how it could ever be worth it here, sorry. Best of luck with it, I hope you get a lot out of the thing.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
