Buying a car for motorway - MPG advice please

Oops sorry missed the £3K at the end. Well how about a 3 series then. Might be very high mileage for an E46 at that price.
He wont want a 3er as the MPG is well under what others have already said. I'd go for an Octavia, bigger than a Fabia and a good cruisier. Real world MPG for the Octy (mk1)- Eastbourne to Blackpool and back on a tank of diesel at £75.00 = 630 miles = £0.11 per mile. Think your budget may get you a mk2 which are even better equipped and more economical."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
For £3k it's hard to look by something with the vag pd engine - octavia or toledo will be the cheapest and are probably the best bet. You could spend £2k on a toledo and have a cracking car for the money, nobody really wants them but they are just a bora/octavia really.
The Mondeo is a good car but you're really taking a risk with the tdci or any other commonrail engine at that age, the golf is too expensive as everybody wants one, passat could be an option, focus with the 1.6tdci is a bit of a liability at that age, the 1.8 is better but you risk similar issues to the Mondeo0 -

Love our Mondeo to pieces but not for its MPGability. We get 48mpg on the motorways and it's only 2 years old so I'm guessing an older one wouldn't do quite as well.
It's also excessively large for one person travelling on their own.0 -
I'm another Mondeo fan.
Currently I drive a two year old Mondeo 2 litre TDCi Auto Estate and get about 43mpg. My previous car was a 51 reg Mondeo TDDi Estate which did about 40mpg, and they can be bought for less than £1k nowadays.
Both are very good motorway cruisers and will do a 100 mile trip without breaking sweat."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -

LOW mpg.
With the vag 1.9PD doing 55+mpg and a taxi driver choice for munching the daily miles I would stick with that family.0 -

Seconded. I have an Octavia with that engine and easily beat the above Mondea economy figures.0 -
Well, the C3 has returned 60mpg on it's first fill, mainly stop start urban rush hour. It has had a few short runs on the motorway, and seems a good candidate for long runs. It's comfortable, quiet, and stable. Hopefully it'll give the 70+ it's supposed to.0

Rubbish!
The kits will cost around £350 and the fitting around £2500
