Clio 1.5dci, fine on the motorway 60mpg real life more if you take it easy(we have one)

Avoid one with a sunroof unless it has had the leak problem fixed

Allthough I think every day it would get a bit tedious so something bigger

the 1.9 seesm to get good numbers in the octavia 55+ reported on skoda sites, a few around at 2-3k but highish miles.

    I would recommend-

    1997 Audi A4 1.9 TDi 110 SE 4dr Diesel Saloon for £1,250

    http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201216465123243/sort/default/usedcars/fuel-type/diesel/model/a4/make/audi/radius/60/page/1/postcode/le29hd?logcode=p

50mpg easily, won't break the bank and lots of money left over which you can put aside for MOT, servicing fuel etc. I had one and did similar mileage.

Don't buy based on manufacturer quoted mpg. More often than not very misleading

Indeed. Very rarely have I failed to exceed it.

As long as you don't mind getting out the other end feeling like you've done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.

There are better cars to do long runs in.

£3000 your into DMF and commonrail territory.

Choose wisely or it maybe cheaper to buy an old V8 Range Rover that does 14mpg.

DMF = half the cars value by the time you add a few extra's. Injectors 1/2 the cars value, Pump 1/3 of the cars value, Turbo 1/4 - 1/2 of the cars value.

Skoda fabia 2002-2006 range. 1.9 tdi (same as ur old golf engine) inside a polo shell. Excellent mpg.

I think you can get a VRS for £3k. I.e. 130bhp and up to 60mpg.
  • TBH performance isn't an issue for me, neither is size really. My main goal is to get a car that gives me the highest mpg on the motorway for £3k. So far it looks like it's a choice from a Skoda Fabia, Audi A3, MK4 golf (again) or a MK1 Focus (all diesel). I should be able to find one with around 70k miles for £3k.

Oops sorry missed the £3K at the end. Well how about a 3 series then. Might be very high mileage for an E46 at that price.
