Bill Shock from Orange

Having recently returned from a week in Spain, I was shocked to find that orange are trying to charge me around £400 for Excess data usage. I had a bolt on for 30Mb a day for a month and one night I used 130Mb thinking I was using the hotel wifi...

I thought there was an EU directive saying you had to be cut off if you exceeded 50 Euros worth.

The galling thing is that the bolt on I purchased was hardly used and through this I have already paid them for around 900Mb of unused data..

Apparently, if you add the European bolt on, that overrides the 40 Euro cap. I am writing this not based on personal experience, but from friends' info and what I have read on other threads here.

I try not to use my Android when I am away and usually get a PAYG sim, but I took my Android last trip and switched off data roaming, double checking with a "Data Counter" app prominent on my main screen so that I could see that I wasn't using any chargeable data.

The position is that you almost certainly owe the money. But 2 things.

    1. Go through the t&c for the bolt on with a fine tooth comb.

    2. If you are in the poo, then try to negotiate (not bully !) Orange into making a goodwill gesture. But you will almost certainly be looking at a 3 figure charge.

    Sorry.

I can sympathise as you have taken some steps to reduce your bill, unless the others with bill shock who come on this forum having used the service without checking the price beforehand. However, did you not check your much mobile data you were using each day to make sure you didn't go over the 30MB/day limit?

In future, get a local SIM card - €7.08 for 1GB for a month is a lot cheaper than £3 per day for 30MB.

You could always ask them to see if they could lower it for what it would have cost if you'd bought a bundle.

Yes, that's what I often advise. However, in this case the OP did buy a bundle. The only larger bundles I know of are only for business customers.

    £50 would have bought him 150mb. http://www.orange.co.uk/roaming/spain/
