Perhaps you should have contacted his insurers directly.
Some insurers have third party claims handlers and will be happy to arrange things like repairs and hire cars themselves (as long as their policyholder admits liability) because it means you won't go to a credit hire or no win no fee solicitor (both very expensive for them).
If your car damage is minor it will probably be below your excess anyway so there may be no point making a claim off your policy.
If you have legal cover then speak to them about getting the other party's insurer to pay form the damage directly.We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
